I think it would be doable, but I wouldn't hold my breath. With very few exceptions, Nikon does not add features to their cameras via firmware updates. Plus, Focus Stacking is a nice selling point for the D850, if they added it to the D810, that would just be one more reason to keep the D810 and not upgrade. If anything, I might expect it to be added to the D500 or D5 (D5 most likely).

I agree with you, Steve. The FB tube is just an extension tube with the stacking computer chip inside. If they updated the 810, I would do exactly what you just stated. The only features that make the 850 attractive to me are the 9fps, and the articulating screen.

Focus stacking is the process of collecting multiple images with incremental changes in the focus. These images are then processed with software designed to use the parts of the image in focus into a single image. The result should be an image that is in focus throughout the image from the closest focus point to the furthest focus point. Two examples of software designed to do this are Helicon Focus and Zerene. Although their primary use was in closeup and macrophotography, this process can also be used in landscape photography. The idea is to place the camera on a tripod, and focus on the nearest point you want to be in focus. You then either adjust the fpcusmusing the focusing ring (more useful for landscape) or use a macro slider or focusing rail to incrementally move the camera and lens taking a series of images. The idea is to overlap the part of the image that is “in focus” as you collect this series of images. These images are then stacked using software.

Check out 22.39 on the video on the page below for a visual demonstration of how it works. It's the D850 review, but I also cover the "what is focus stacking" question at that time mark.

Sure can. The hard part is taking the shots with the focus changes in each shot and making sure the camera doesn't move. The stacking in post isn't difficult.

That's the way you do it, you move the camera in increments!

There are two different ways to capture a stack - changing focus and changing camera distance.
