Nice ones David..he was watching you all the way!

Hello Doddy

They have very good eyesight. I was about 300 yards away and when I raised the camera to my eye it dropped it's head and flattened it's ears which gave it away. If we get more snow this week I'll go back and see if I can get some out in the open. Thank you very much for looking and for commenting, always appreciated.

The only true indigenous hare in the British Isles is the Mountain Hare (Lepus timidus). It has been here since the Ice Age and lives at higher elevations. In winter it sheds it's brown fur and turns white. However when winter is mild and snow is limited their white coats make them vulnerable to predators. To add to their problems they are now turning brown again meaning they are vulnerable even in the snow. I spotted this one from about 300 yards out lying in the heather with it's ears laid flat against it's body trying to look like a patch of snow. I tacked my way towards it getting to within about 30 feet before it lost it's nerve and bolted.

Taken in the Lammermuir Hills south east of Edinburgh.

Hello Sirius_one

Thank you very much for viewing and for commenting, always appreciated. I am really pleased that you enjoyed them. It has turned cold again here and more snow is forecast so I'm hoping to get up there again this week.
