up close and personal
After freezing my tail off for about an hour and a half I got back in my car and this guy practically flew in the window.
Great shot, you have to wait them out and insidious buggers know just when you leave.

Thanks.
I sometimes wish I hadn't gotten hooked on bird photography. It's maddening!!
Excellent shot, Paul. Birds drive me crazy, too. That's what makes it so rewarding when you get a shot like this one.
The shadow on the wing makes this extraordinary !

Paul, I must say that I am not a "bird" kind of photo lover but having said that, your shot is the exception and it is a very nice shot. I agree that the shadow on the wing does make the shot extra good. Bravo! It was worth the discomfort for the shot. You have a trophy as well as an adventure!
Excellent details, even the lid partially over the eye!
I sympathize - I was out yesterday morning at the local birdee place and it was 25 degrees out.
Your results were worth the cold!! The shadow on the underside of its wing is very uniques.
Beautiful download, Paul!
I see you applied strong vignetting in post. I think a stronger blue in the sky is called for too.
Excellent shot!! Assuming somewhere in New Mexico. Exact location would be nice.

Taken at one of the ponds on Rt 1 just north of the Bosque del Apache visitors center. (Bosque del Apache is about 12 miles south of Socorro, NM)
This is where the birds (mostly sandhill cranes and snow geese) spend their nights. The standard routine is to get there around sunrise and wait for the bird to start leaving the pond to feed in the area fields.
The snow geese often take off in one truly immense group (thousands of them) while the cranes peel off in dribs and drabs.
