I used an empty parking lot, a cheap plastic toy and bit of image manipulation to create this unworldly fantasy scene.

I've come across his work a few years ago - definitely a big inspiration for me. Smith's skill at making miniatures appear life size is simply amazing. The illusions are just about as perfect as you can get.

Creative and fun. Was the figure actually placed on the ground in that setting, or added in pp? I am interested to know more about the perspective and lighting. Thanks!

Hi, Linda! The figure (about 4 inches tall) was placed on the ground, and I used a pocket camera to capture it.

Here's the original image from the camera, which will give you much insight as to what I actually did in pp. All editing was done in GIMP.

Attention to detail made me stare at the download for quite a while. You have planets in the sky! Wonderful. The reddish martian color cast is perfect for the effect. It was important to have a background; but you washed it out just enough so that it is there without dominating or detracting from the effect. Whatever is dominating the camera left side of this photo is a very believable other worldly structure. I'd say more than a "bit" of imagination went into this photo and its absolutely delightful. Bravo!

Thoughtful analysis. I paid special attention to arrangement - for example, how the sunlight and shadows fell onto the subject, or how the background could be used for effect and making the composition work. The structure on the left (actually a support beam for a stairwell enclosure; the parking lot was in fact the upper level of a parking garage) was so perfect for the science fiction feel I wanted, it simply had to be in the shot!
I'm glad you enjoyed this image. Love your work, Erich!
