Help me, experts! I am looking for an upgrade to my very basic SB 300. My requirements are simple: of course, must be compatible with my Nikon D5500, TTL, a FAST recycle time, able to turn so I can bounce off walls, and not large or loud. I am ready to venture into 3rd party brands, but I have heard Yongnuo manuals are very difficult to understand and I love a good manual. Your insights are most appreciated.

My main advice, from personal experience, would be to get the most powerful unit you can afford. You can always turn them down. I now have a relatively powerful Canon 580 that can light up an entire room when bounced, a feature that I use for some real estate photos.

Look at refurbs if you want a name brand (i.e SB 700 Nikon refurb and Cameta for $260) or there is the Yungnuo or Godox route. I've had issues with Yungnuo (inconsistant output) but having bought a Godox TT685 flash, it does a decent job and can also control other Godox flashes if you stay within the brand.
If there is a reliable photo store near you, I would suggest you see what they have both in new and used. With the number of brick and mortar stores dropping, it's always good to support our neighbors to keep their doors open.

Look at neewer, $34 at Amazon, almost identical to all the others, no manual is really needed, it is pretty intuitive and at that price you can't go wrong

I have 2 Neewer TT660II, plus a set of Altura (master and slave) controls for under $100.
One charge(4AA rechargeables) probably provides flashes over 150 times(depending of intensity set).
I preferred them over Yongnuo of which the battery chamber doors were flimsy and busted on both; hope they have changed their design.

Godox is far superior to any of the other china off brands.

Suggest Yongnuo or Godox. You will have to decide what features you require, which will determine the price.

If you do decide to look at Neewer and Godox, they are the same company. Also, some of Adorama's Flashpoint line are made by Neewer

Yes and no. Godox is the factory. Neewer buys and rebrands. Flashpoint is a rebrand of Godox. My point is that Neewer doesn’t make them—and not all Neewers are made by Godox

I have a couple Nissin's that I have been very pleased with; most recent is the i60 A with which I have been most pleased. Additionally the i60 has built in compatibility with the Nissin Air remote trigger system should you ever wish to expand your shooting range.
Overall an excellent flash and the one time I had an issue the distributor could not have been more helpful in resolving the problem.

I choose the Altura Flash for Nikon, has been a good one for me.
