The Winter Olympics haven't even started, and they have an issue already. Apparently Reuters distributed pictures of opening ceremony rehearsal. North Korea and IOC are mad - so Reuters will be banned from covering the opening ceremonies, and the photographer who took the pictures is banned from the entire games.

That is not a photography issue but a copyright issue.

Yep. It is only one week away. North Korea said they would be good guys for at least two weeks, provided they have some participation in the Opening Ceremonies. What role is unknown. Maybe acknowledgement of their flag in it? My favorite is the Downhill Skiing.

That was a rehearsal. It allowed the organizers to run through and see what they had missed in planning, allow the TV broadcasts to set their cameras, lights, and booths, and photographers to check their positions, exposures, and lenses. While the photographer was allowed to shoot the practice, Reuters should not have published them. They were to iron out technical problems only.

No, the issue was their violation of a photography embargo. Issues such that are discussed here.

You pay your money and take your chances. It looks like Reuters and that photographer lost.

And that is related to what? Copyright issue. If you do not want something published it makes everything simple.

NO PHOTOGRAPHY means just that. You do not have the right to take a and publish a photograph.

If reuters broke the rule and got caught, their fault. I will not cry for them.

Joe, so I take it you are part of the opening ceremony organization...., or are you merely speculating on what may have been the obvious, or BUT MAYBE NOT???
Or something you read somewhere?
Please qualify your facts!!!

Reuters and that photographer who leaked photos, must have thought they were too big to be banned. A lesson learned.

This should be a lesson for anyone who says "The rules are ...., but you can get away with ...."

I was in both Montreal and Calgary when each of those cities hosted the Olympics. I did not shoot sports events on the site but I had many related assignments and a friend of mine was an accredited official photographer. Believe me, there enough legal issues to keep an army of lawyers busy forever and enough rules, restrictions and regulations to start a religion. In Montreal, one of my cohorts from the days when I worked at the newspaper, was named chief photographer for the entire event- he was a superb photojournalist but had no administrative experience and nearly suffered a nervous breakdown.

There were exclusive rights, copyright issues, and bureaucracy beyond explanation. Every time I went into the site for a minor shoot- well, it would probably need fewer passes and paperwork to get int Fort Knox!

A Montreal restaurant that was established for 40 years had to take its sign down because it was called the "OLYMPIC" DINER! Seems that was in the agreement with the city! As if everyone would think that little "greasy spoon" was affiliated to the event. The event seemed to take over and engulf the entire city- in both cases, during the preparations, construction the even and the aftermath. Yes! it puts cities "on the map", it stimulates tourism and brings in lots of money- that's great as long as you don't have to live there.

What the OP reported- easy to believe and that's kinda the tip of the iceberg.

I wonder if any of the North Koreans who participate in the Olympics will finish their event or not and try to seek asylum?
