This engine is a living legend. I caught it on a rare trip through Boise last April. She is a beautiful marvel of early 1900's engineering.
Terrific subject. Glad you included the flag.

Very nice JDawson, I think she is the prettiest Northern I've ever seen.
Thanks. Here's a shot of the drive wheels for more detail.

Great capture of a beautiful engine, JDdawson!
Hope to see her someday. Lovely crisp detail and even tones in your B&W. Her build date, by the way, was 1944, and she's never officially been retired from the Union Pacific roster (for a while she wore the number 8444 to avoid a numbering conflict with a diesel then in service).
Well, the traveling repair engineer told me that they rescued her from a museum in California and refurbed her in Wyoming. I don't know if museum equals "retired", but she was certainly long out to pasture.
John
Well, OK, I think your source, however, was misinformed. Nothing I've researched says the 844 was ever in a museum, although it appeared in steam at the opening of the California State Railroad Museum. All of the source material I've seen (Wikipedia and other UP steam-centric sites) says that after retiring its other steamers, they kept this one for special events. Cheers. --Al

Not true. The 844 is famous for being the only American built steamer to never have been retired.
