Cold and cloudy so sitting here tinkering. Never been up in the ozone of max ISO. Interesting...

Plenty of noise.

What's really interesting is to compare high ISO noise from similar sensors, using different camera brands. Some produce more useful "arty" effects than others. Some produce an ugly smear of color. Some produce files that work better with noise reduction software. I haven't done it in a while, but if you have more than one brand of camera, it's an interesting comparison to make.

Hers's similar shot from one of my other cameras. 7D half frame not FF as 5D. 6400 is as fast as this camera can muster.

I had a 7D on loan from CPS for testing several years ago. I was mildly impressed with the output. The camera was built well, and it was fast for its time, but I expected a bigger jump in image quality from my 50D.

I love Canon software, body ergonomics, menus, and L-glass. But their sensors need some updates, and their dSLR video is lagging the mirrorless sector now, except for their class-leading dual pixel AF.

The 7D is a solid camera, but noisey at high ISOs. When I had one, I tried to stay at ISO 1600 and 3200 max. That caused to me to move to a 5D3, and now I shoot up to 12,800, although I prefer to be at or below 6,400. Some noise if you pixel peep at very high ISOs, but very usable.

Pretty typical... My GH4 has about the same noise profile as a 7D. I try to stay at 1600 or below, and have 3200 set as my auto ISO maximum. I will use it for video at 3200 and even 6400, but no higher than 3200 for stills. Most full frame bodies can produce very usable results at ISO 6400, and 12,800 is reasonably clean. You lose about one stop of DR between full frame and APS-C, and one more stop between APS-C and Micro 4/3. That's assuming all are current sensor offerings. Older gear is often much noisier. ISO 1000 was as far as I could stand to go on the old Canon EOS 50D.

Thanks for the quality feedback! I seldom shoot over 400 ISO but this is worth exploring.

While we are on the subject... here's a grab I did about 5 am last June (on the way to an air race.). Hand held laying on the hood of my truck. 6400 ISO 7D 100-400 zoom.

Totally unplanned and unprepared, but gave me a moon I could paste in from time to time.

On small prints it was fine. See coffee mug, below.
