The Street Preacher

I shot this guy in Cincinnati last fall. It was my first foray into street photography. He was a street preacher who had a pretty commanding view of his block. There was no sneaking up on this guy or getting a true candid without sniping with a 400mm lens - which I did not have on me. So, I stopped and talked with the fellow for a few minutes and then took this shot while he was still preaching away. I am interested in thoughts from the group and particularly what I could do to make it a better street photograph.

Details:
Nikon D500
Tamron 24-70/2.8 VR G2 @ 24mm
f/5.6
1/1000
ISO 800

This is a good photo. You got some action on his part, which is always good. It's Street now, but I'd suggest backing off and showing more of his surroundings. That gives the viewer a better idea of his situation--is there an audience, or is he talking to an empty street, or perhaps just one or two passers-by (who are ignoring him)? Does the area look "rich" or "poor"? So overall, I like the photo and would like more context. And keep doing Street.

Thanks for the input. In the uncropped version, there is only a few more bricks in front of the preacher and behind him a couple of reflections and a logo in the door glass - Advanced Technology Group. I get what you are saying in that I could have used the sneaker zoom to widen the shot. We were the only 2 people on the street at that time, so that would have just shown a wider view of the preacher and his setting. To get the rich/poor setting, I would have had to pull way back and the preacher would have become a very small part of the shot. I do understand what you are saying about context - thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. In the uncropped version, t... (show quote)

For Street Photography the preacher should clearly not be the subject. If he is it becomes a Street Portrait.

The subject should be the relationships between the man and the context of the environment. That is Street Photography.
