I did this several years ago when my grandmother was in a nursing home. I approached the Walmart Photo Center about a break on pricing and when they heard what I was doing for free as a donation to the nursing home, they volunteered to process and print all my pics for free as a donation to the community also. (Yes, that was in the days of film.)
This might be something you could talk a local printshop into doing for you also.

Thanks MT that is a great idea!

I'm with you on that notion Patrick. Recently moved to Flor-Ida and there many senior citizens afoot here. What a wonderful idea! I may do the same. Please post to let us know how that's working out for you.

Thanks for all the input. I threw this idea out to see if everyone, or anyone, thought it was a good idea. I have planned it all out in case you guys, as my measuring device, found it good. I did not lay the whole plan out in the initial post because I thought it over burdening just to see if the idea was one y'all thought these folks might favor.

Basically, my plan was to offer these facilities and residents a chance for me to come in an do a portrait completely free of charge for display in the resident's room. I absolutely plan to get the permission of the chief administrator and the residents (or relatives in the case of a relative being appointed as a guardian. I planned to let the administrative staff advise me of which, if any residents that would apply to and even encourage them to seek that permission as they are much more likely to be familiar with the family. I do not intend to inquire personally as to the medical and/or mental condition of any of the residents - I am well aware of HIPPA. Lastly, I will not use any of the images for any commercial purpose and will clearly state that in the MOA (Memorandum of Agreement) I present to the facility if they choose to accept my donation. I will ask for permission to use some of the images in a special gallery on my website so that any distant relatives of the residents can view them.

This isn't a project that I have not given a lot of thought to, I truely have. I just wanted to ask me fellow photography buffs if they thought it was a good idea and I get the overwhelming feeling from you all that it most certainly is. Thank you all for your input and more importantly your advice and suggestions!!!!

i think that it is a wonderful idea. if you are using Photoshop to print the photos, i would suggest that the small photo be 3.5 x 5. the reason is that you can get four pictures on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper whereas you can only get two 4 x 6 pictures on the same paper. if you are going to take the small pictures to a photo shop, then this does not matter. if i can help more, let me know

i am sorry that i misread you writing. i thought you were giving both sizes to the patients. i would suggest 5x7 so that they could put it in a frame if you are printing it in Photoshop or 4x6 if you are having them printed in a photo store as it would allow you to print more for the same amount of money.

Good Luck,

I think it's a great idea, but you need to make sure you've got the homes' management, as well as the patients on board. I have found that when I have wanted to take photos of, say, groups, people sometimes doubt your motives. Good luck with it.

Helping Kids and old people will make you feel better. I donate time and pictures to a few inner city high schools and the kids love it. I turned one loose with a camera and she got some awesome shots of her fellow students!

I have another suggestion for you also. Many of the facilities have special events, and it would be great to volunteer your services during these events. Like at Christmas, taking pictures w/ Santa if they are able to get Santa Claus to come. I am in the medical field and work w/ many extended care facilities, and they are often appreciative of any type of volunteer work.
You have a great idea, and I know the residents and facilities will appreciate your work.
THANK YOU for your time to give some joy to these folks.

I also think it is a great idea. In addition to taking photos of the patients, do you think they themselves would like a picture of one of their loved ones ( family ). After all they are the ones in a home and perhaps THEY would cherish a picture to look at.

As a result of a conversation with a coworker I too, am interested in performing the same service in my area. My coworker's mother was in an extended care facility and she wishes that she had photographs of her mother during that time. She said they would mean so much to her now that her mother has passed on. She suggested that I do the very thing you at talking about. I would look forward to hearing how you work out the details and would like to know what is contained in your memorandum.

You have the time and funding. It's a good cause! I say go for it!

*That reminds me of a sexy calendar of all over 50 YO women shop owners. It was done several years ago to help the nearly failing town. It was done in a very good style and taste. it ended up making a few thousands bucks for their town. I last heard they were planning to do more each year.
