I will spend 2 weeks in Kauai Hawaii and have no laptop. What device to use to download, view and edit photos? I currently wonder if iPad would do the job short of buying a laptop. If iPad, what model do you recommend?

Do you really need to edit on the trip, or can you wait until the two weeks are up and you are back home again?
If you're going to Kauai for vacation, don't make it anymore complicated that necessary.

I wait until I get home if I don't take my laptop.

I take a iPad Pro with me and find it is very useful. Down load all my pictures each day and then I can tell if I need to redo a special shot. The whole process doesn't take very long and I cut out a lot of unnecessary shots. Makes it easier when I get home. /George

I do not take a laptop or an iPad when I travel. My D800 has both a SD and a CF slot so I set it to write every photo to both flash memory cards. If your camera does not have dual memories, take a sufficient number of SD cards with you so you can change cards every day or two. That way, if a card fails, you will not lose all your pictures. If you are staying at a hotel, check in advance to see if the hotel has an area with computers available for the use of their guests; most hotels like Marriott or Hilton do. If your hotel does, you could copy your photos from your SD card (you should buy a USB card reader before your trip) to another USB device such as a thumb drive or a small portable USB hard drive such as a Western Digital Passport drive.

Get the Lightroom CC Mobile app which lets you do a decent job of editing photographs. And, if you have an Adobd Creative Cloud account, and a decent internet connection, your edits will be waiting in the cloud for when you get home.

He said he doesn't have a laptop and since Lightroom CC requires the software to be installed on the computer, a hotel guest computer will not allow him to do that.

I would use a little hard drive, even laptops don't have a lot of capacity! You can get a little WD (4TB) for just around a hundred bucks!

Why waste time on the computer when you are in paradise?

Take extra, large capacity cards. A couple of 64 GB or a 128GB should last a couple of weeks. If you need more then buy another locally.

Enjoy your time there. Edit them when you get home.

If he doesn't have a computer, an ordinary hard drive will not do him any good if he is not in a hotel with computers for their guest's use. There are one or two backup drives on the market that do not require a computer to transfer photos, but I do not know much about them. In any case, backing up his pictures is more important than being able to edit them on the road.

Edit when you get home. Get more sd cards (or whatever media you use). If you want to back up while on the road, get a
Hard drive with a card reader that can direct copy without a computer. No need bring a laptop to edit while on vacation.

i like iPads but they are a pain as far as capacity goes, would be great if you could just hook up an external 2.5 to them and be able to write to it.

They are not designed that way though, and the easy method is to buy icloud storage and try and find internet access where you are.
there are other services which work but all are relatively low on storage unless you pay.

The other way of transferring is via a computer and a lightning usb cable, you could find an internet cafe and hook up to one of their machines, you will almost certainly want a local internet connection.

Actually for Hawaii if you are american you probably have a data plan for the ipad valid in Hawaii in which case you will want an ipad with a cellular connection. GPS will work with it too.

I've been hacking together an alternative using an AndroidTV box but running Linux from the microSD card and its pretty good i set things up so it acts a wifi hotspot and shares usb drives plugged into it. I've even had it running off a 5600mAH powerbank so it needs no mains at all for a few hours anyway.

The iPad will let you connect to shared drives on the lan for reading and writing. i've got it currently copying my Lightroom photos to a portable 2.5" drive. The 4Terrabyte drive cost me about $110, and the androidtv box was about $50 the plan currently is to have it backing up my main nas on a day to day basis. But it will be easy to pick up and take with me.

For Hawaii its probably easiest just to buy some icloud storage, if it was in the bush in Africa or really remote, a local storage option would be a good option. A small Netbook might be an option, they are gutless but you don't need a powerhouse to move files around. The ipad has some pretty good editing tools affinity photo on the ipad is getting better and better :)

Lightroom CC Mobile runs on a tablet or phone, which is why I suggested.
