Hi, Everyone,
My name is Roger and I have a question. I use a Sony digital Alpha 55 camera with Sigma lenses but never see any discussions about it. It's either a Nikon or Canon. Why not? I find it to be a great camera. :|

Hello Roger,
The same can be said of Leica, Pentax, Olympus, Minolta, Fuji!
Nikon and Canon have enormous monetary budgets to promote, advertise and sell their products world wide.
You should post some of your work and show what the Sony Apha 55 can do.

I liked your second sunset better. Less glare of the sun and an intersting sky.
Sony has an interesting range of cameras, from relatievely traditional reflexes, shoot-though mirrors to very compact bodies, all with the APS sensors; original designs. You dont have to feeel inferior with a Sony.

Welcome to our forum. There are lots of Sony owners here, and they love their cameras, as they should. Stay tuned, and they'll make an appearance.

Roger:
I think you have a great camera. Many people drive Fords and Chevs, some people drive Jaguars. It's nice having the ability to make our own choice. I hope you have/try Minolta lenses with your A55. They're worth a look see.

I have a high end Sigma telephoto lense but also looking at other types of lenses. In fact, Minolta is one of the lenses.

Yes, most cameras that get mentioned are either Canon or Nikon. They are the most popular cameras, have the biggest market.

But really, what does it matter? Unless you have a question specific to a particular camera it shouldn’t matter at all. Quite a few of the questions asked are looking for information that can be applied to many different camera manufactures. This site is not camera manufacture specific, it is about photography in general and a lot can be learned about taking photos no matter what camera you are using from UHH.

Being an Olympus user, I was a bit worried about this being just another "canikon" forum with people dumping on my choice of equipment. I have found just the opposite ... very wide range of people from different backgrounds/locations, using an incredible range of equipment of every make and type imaginable (i.e., not all DSLRs, but loads of bridge camera and P&S users). So jump in, post away, have some fun and pick up some pointers along the way :)

Hi Roger,
I am looking at purchasing a Sony A65 with the kit lens and possibly one other. The second lens wuld depend on price and if my budget would stretch to cover it. I know people in my camera club that have the 55 and love it, that what is inspiring my purchase. I also have a Canon but find for travel it is getting heavier with each trip. The weight factor is a big one for me, since I have a shoulder problem that acts up every so often. The pics you sent were great, the second sunset was my favorite, keep on enjoying your camera, I hope to be able to post some of my sonies soon.

I've heard the A65 is a great upgrade! When I purchased my A55, I was steered away from purchasing the kit lens. Therefore, I purchased a higher end Sigma lens. However, there is a lot of glass making them very heavy...obviously not something you would want to consider if you're having shoulder issues. Good luck and look forward to some pics...

The A65 is an excellent camera. Bought mine 6 months ago and no regrets at all. Came with the 18-55 kit lens and and I bought a 75-300 as well. Both do what they are supposed to do very well, but neither are great as walk-around lenses (I dislike carrying and constantly having to change lenses) - the 18-55 is limited on the telephoto end and the 75-300 limited on the wide-angle side of things (as well as being a bit bulky).

After careful consideration I added a 16-105, which easily handles about 98% of all the photos I take and is a better quality lens than the other two and pretty compact, although a bit more expensive. I hardly ever take this lens off the camera now and wouldn't be without it.

Very occasionally I need the extra zoom of the 75-300, but as the 24.3 megapixel sensor of the A65 captures so much information, most of the time I can shoot with the 105 and later zoom in much closer digitally on the computer without any noticeable loss of quality to the final image.

You aren't looking close enough. Use "search" at the top of the page and put in "Alpha 55" or "Alpha 57" or "Alpha 77" and you'll find plenty of discussion about Sony cameras.

I bought the a57 and I like it so much that I am selling all my other gear from another major manufacture. I plan to get a 2nd body and the a65 looks like the one I will get.
