Background image of sunrise in July, 2017 at a local nature center. Moon phases were taken over a period of seventeen months with either a Canon 70D or 80D with a Tamron 150-600mm telephoto. Comments are welcomed.

I had the idea about two years ago. Took the sunrise background last summer. Did a little post-processing with PS Elements. Darkened the sky and reduced the intensity of the sun's light on the left. About 600 moon pictures were taken over 16 months. I shot the moon phases in RAW and processed to increase/decrease exposure, increase contrast and clarity. In PSE, I converted the moon phase to black and white and then used the quick selection tool to outline the lighted areas. Copied and pasted each moon phase layer on the larger sunrise. When all there, I adjusted each moon phase to approximate the same brightness and clarity. I also adjusted the size and position using the move tool. The grid in the view drop down helped with the alignment. I finished it with using a warming filter (85A) set at about 45-50% to give each phase just a little warmth. Hope this helps.
