I'm going on vacation and only want to carry one lens. I have a Nikon 85mm 1.8 and a Nikon 24-120 f4. My camera is a Nikon 750.
Most of my shots are "wife in front of a building, wife shopping, wife getting on the bus. I think you got the idea what I shoot. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Flexibility - flexibility - flexibility. I'd take the 24-120 and let ISO make up for the f4 vs f1.8.

Except maybe for the pictures of the wife spending money shopping, no fast action shots seem likely. A fast lens seems less necessary and you get a wider choice of perspectives with the 24-120. It gets my vote.

The 24-120 F4 is a pretty good lens unlike some earlier models and pretty well stays on my D810 when I take road trips. Versatility is king here.

The one that I would choose is the same as every one else, the 24-120 a good all around lens, but if all your going to do is photograph your wife shopping, get a good pocket camera. Or use your cell phone. My wife goes shopping on the weekends, it's nothing worth photographing.

I would take the 24 to 120 zoom
Many of my best photographs on vacation, were taken outside the store my wife is shopping in.
The zoom gives you the versatility to find those pictures.

My single favorite prime would be a 35mm f/2. If I wanted lightweight and one lens.
I think 85mm is too long as a one focal length travel lens....but it does depend on what you like to shoot...as it is a fine fast lens

The 85 has a purpose, but it not a vacation lens.
No one will suggest taking only an 85mm.

What lens would you use if you were chronicling a day in the life of your wife? "wife getting in car", "wife in front of store", "wife shopping". Same idea. Same lens.

Take the body but not the lens. Tell the wife that, "when we get into town, you want to look for a lens for your camera". Should save you thousands of dollars over the course of your vacation.
