Gimbals necessitate using a tripod ( for the most part) which severely limits mobility .....

which is mostly OK around feeding stations, nests, ect. - otherwise, not so much.

I second this one. Been using the Nest setup with the carbon fiber tripod for a few years now. Still works like a champ.

Another vote in favor of Nest gimbals available from UHH member MT Shooter at his Camera Cottage store in Billings, Montana. Shipping is prompt and very secure. Customer service is first rate!

MT Shooter carries a gimble that I think would be excellent. Can't remember the make and model, so you might check with him.

Gimbals are designed for long, heavy tele lenses. They can be restrictive with shorter lenses. I use a Wimberley but I would not recommend it for a budget buy.

A lot of Hogs are sold on the Nest which is about 1/2 the cost.

Carter's Camera Cottage http://www.cameracottage.com/
top of home page click "Equipment" to see info on the gimbal head
top of home page click "web store", gimbal head* on second row down $298 and of the tripod choices I use the NT-6324CT CF $299.

*2 versions - The head is fluid dampened so the Arctic is for use in very cold weather.

Take a look at the RH-1 from Lensmaster. They have a YouTube channel to explain how to set it up. I have one and it really is a cracking bit of kit. Be wary of the cheap Chinese jobs, they do appear good value until you try and use them and discover that the action is quite stiff. Do a YouTube search and you will be able to assess for yourself. Lensmaster is a Brit company so I'm probably biased: but the guy who owns the company was fed up with the high prices being charged by certain manufacturers, so his prices are pretty good.

Me three. Simple design and easy to adjust tension. I also changed the mounting plate system on mine.
