A bridge camera does just that - it bridges the gap between a point and shoot camera and a DSLR. It's got a larger sensor and more features than a point and shoot but not as many features as a DSLR. Most bridges have a permanent zoom lens with an optical and digital method of zooming like a point and shoot; a DSLR has a variety of lenses that can be purchased and used as desired.
