I'm distracted by the section of wall between the windows. It appears somewhat to be coming out of the hat.

True, broke some rules with this one. Just saw the mottled light on the old hat and the urge to shoot just happened.

Story would be hat feather and the shadow... the rest should not be there... keep it simple...

I like everything about it except that wall portion directly behind the hat. Is there somewhere you could move to that would get rid of that and still have the other elements in the image?

I agree with dpullum and AzPicLady.

I find an interesting dynamic at work between the feather in hat and the flora to the right, across the brim of the hat.

I would have asked the owner of the hat if I could reposition the hat a little for a shot. I would even offer to send a copy.

Would you be able to recreate the various elements by borrowing similar items?

Wonder if I had not used the phrase still life if all of you wold find the hats surroundings more acceptable. The hat lives in the front porch as a decor item so perhaps I'm too used to its space and don't see the surrounds as distracting as others do.

I think "still life" as a misnomer for "static life". Still life, even in paintings, tell stories. Someone referred to "still life" as "life in repose".

The location serves as what? You might be able to ask the proprietor if you could "work" on your shot. I can see an antiqued framed photograph.

I feel that the "surroundings" diffuse the point of the story. Many of us look at photographs first, then read up on the backgrounds.

Recreating would be a possibility. The hat is still in place. The appropriate fabric thumbtacked over the window solves the bg problem. Sun angle is just about right weather permitting for an hour or so each day.

(wanders off thinking)

I like the image, but would like it better without that pattern that shows up behind it on both sides. It could probably be mitigated in post processing if you too a notion. The hat itself is a good find, and worth working with in set up or in post, or both.

Your choice of toning is excellent.

I like Minniev's idea of "mitigating" the background. Having said that, the photo has a very appealing soft feel to it. The saving grace of the background is that the hat is directly in front of that wooden vertical that separates it from the fence outside. Not a big distraction to me. I suppose, if a re-shoot is possible, I might try to ditch the background; but it is not a deal breaker to me. Maybe I'm just not that easily distracted? Nah, my wife will tell you that is not the case. lol

Managed to get the stuff outside somewhat oof but the repeating pattern made by the top of that chain link fence put up a fight. I personally don't mind the inclusion of some of the hat's surroundings as much as some obviously do. I have tried some pp tricks and will keep working on this one.

I really like that hat, by the way.
