If they are "non-essential" WTF do we need them in the first place? Hence the terms, "trough divers", "grifters" and malingerers.

Before you comment you need to research what Non-essential and Essential mean.

No Spudly, Not the "freedictionary" but the Government.
Non-Essential doesn't mean that you do not perform a function, it means that it is not essential to the security/safety of the Country. For instance: Someone who processes your request to get a passport is non-essential. That doesn't mean they don't do anything.
I'm sure wh**ever menial employment you've found would list you as non-essential, but that your employer still expects you to do something while on the clock.
Correct?

I’m a “non-essential” employee. I manage an ACAT-II program for the Air Force....I managed the same program at the DoD level for four years. I’d agree that, even though I bust my butt and do the work of several people....the government gets their money’s worth and more from me....if I went away and/or my program went away, life would go on. The US would still be the #1 superpower and militarily strong. That said....I contribute something tangible to the safety and effectiveness of the war fighter. The government is full of red tape. There are so many levels of security and red tape that we often times tie our own hands because we are trying to manage a huge monster.

There are bad apples, but there are many more great people running our country (I exempt most politicians from this statement).

As for essential, they mean immediately essential. If they were not to report for work, the near-term security, safety, or health of individuals or our nation runs significant risk of being c*********d.

“Essential” and “Non-essential” are also not the terms when referring to a shutdown-furlough. Those terms are generally used when the government closes for, say, inclement weather. During a furlough, employees that must report for work (usually without pay) are referred to as “excepted” employees.

More than you want to know about shutdown furloughs...

I have a Navy vet daughter married to a active duty Army Non-Com. Trust me, I get it and agree 1000% with you. My son in law is doing three different jobs right now with resources depleted under Obama. However, at the end of the day you all get paid.

That’s not a guarantee, but would be a political hot potato to not pay us.

We waste a lot of time and resources on this political game. Not just the shutdown but the incessant CRs. We spend half of every year...half of our time....juggling drips of resources and managing uncertainty and risk.

Right now, personally, I’m waiting for the budget so my leadership can buy me a decent computer. I use relatively complicated Excel workbooks and my computer can’t handle them. I spend half my time waiting for the spinning wheel to stop and that’s a lot of productivity lost. In the meantime, last week we were issued new computers. They are identical to the ones we were using save for running windows 10 instead of 7....and they’re 10 years old. Probably bought at the last minute to spend Budget money that could have been used for training if only it had been available on 1 Oct.

It’s s mess.
