I have the feeling my wife and I were there in 2003... It was not that cold then...

I will have to check the images I have from that trip. It just looks like 'deja vu'.

Did you happen to take the small ferry? The one that can take only two cars and manhandled to reverse the platform?

Yeah a lot of people take the same shot it's taken from a car lay bye. We have been to Glencoe/Scotland quite a few times traveling from Wiltshire, over a 7hrs drive. Never seen the ferry tho'.

The slope of the hills provide nice framing but of what?

Scottish moors or moorland. This is image represents what you see there when you travel.

When we there we found small hairy horses, sheeps (what else) and hairy cows. Also there are ruins castles and small fortified farms all over. Many of the fields are separate by wall of stones created over the centuries by farmers picking up heavier stuff from their fields. This is also some sort of defense as once can get really get tired stepping over those things.

Why do I remember so well? It was our first vacation from when we lived in Bahrain where there is no distinctive feature, no water and absolutely no greenery to speak off (artificial palm trees do not count). Being in Scotland was such a contrast that it impressed both of us. Since it was during the highland games or celebration season we also had a blast with that. The weather was clement, not much rain, the midges were not out (small blood sucker worse than mosquitoes) so we basically did not experience any of the negative as the area tends to be overcast, misty if not rainy and cold. I am not sure what will happens to this great area when the climate takes effect... Mini ice age as predicted for most of Europe?

I did get a feeling of a harsh life, isolation and possible poverty....
