"A billabong is an oxbow lake, an isolated pond left behind after a river changes course. Billabongs are usually formed when the path of a creek or river changes, leaving the former branch with a dead end. Billabongs, reflecting the arid Australian climate in which these "dead rivers" are found, fill with water seasonally and are dry for a greater part of the year". Wikipedia
Camped beside this one a while back, out of Blackall (pop <2000) n Central Queensland.
And this one of the Murray River - about 1000 miles due south of Blackall. Camped here in the Police Paddocks.
All my 70 years I thought a billabong was some sort of weird-down-under animal. Now I know...thanks. Nice shot, too.
Now I've got "Waltzing Matilda" going through my head - lovely shots, though!
Thanks for the information and pictures!

Very nice set and learned something new to me---thanks!
Nice photos--I, too, never knew what a billabong really was.
Enjoyed your photos and the education
