Not sure how other members feel but sometimes I think it's difficult to have a detached view or opinion on how good, or bad your own work really is....
This is why I would love to have a mentor who could view online what I have uploaded to Flickr and tell me honestly what I should keep or delete?

What do you think about this?

My current work is here:

Honestly getting someone to look at your whole flickr stream and offer any meanful C&C is going to be difficult. It's best to post 3 to 5 in the photo gallery of what you consider your best images and ask for honest and blunt C&C.

Put your big girl/boy panties on and hold on tight. :)

I will tell you, as a newer member, puttin' on the big girl panties is a must....BUT, I have gotten brutally honest feedback that has already made me better.

Ditto. Then I do what they tell me and repost. Rinse and repeat till they either tell me it's great, because it is, or because I'm pathetic and they are tired of me. Either works.

The feedback I have recieved on this site had made me a better photographer but you have to be willing to take the comments to heart and try them out. I also think three of the best from a shoot will draw sincere critique from a variety of perspectives not just one like a sole mentor would provide. Good luck to you

And if you think we are too kind, I can give you a site that will be brutally honest. :P

"Put your big girl/boy panties on and hold on tight." Love it!

That is why I joined this group. To get honest feedback from people who know and to learn from them. Mentoring program in a way with humor.

Matt, I think you would have a problem picking 3 - 5 shots to post. I've had a look at your Flickr portfolio, and there are just too many good shots to choose from! You show a very good understanding of lighting and composition, and also what is arguably the hardest thing in photography, the ability to 'see' pictures that others might miss. Maybe you should be the one doing the mentoring!

I receintly put 2 photos up for C&C. I spent the whole day making changes to the photos, mostly one of them. When done I had two very nice photos. Those that helped were honest, not nasty but honest.

I would not want a mentor. When I post here I get responces from members I do not know. They have no reason to not be honest with me. That is the way I want it, that way I can learn.

Not only that but often others learn from my experiences, and I can learn from others that post photos also.

As mentioned though, make sure you have thick skin. You may not like what you are told.

A big advantage of posting here is that, as you will find, members often do not agree. Not everyone likes the same thing. Sometimes there is no "right or wrong".

I think that the Board needs a C&C section so once you post the picture, you know that honesty rules and you can prepare yourself for the good and bad!

Matt, your photos are great and not a bad artist either! Why don't you join a photography club to that you can have more critique and enter competitions. You can then see how really good you are and pick up tips from other photographers. I learned loads when I was a club member in Tunbridge Wells, laer president for a couple of years. Great stuff.

Gotta say I liked 90% of them. Very nice treatments and clarity when you wanted it and good artsy when you wanted it. You have a great eye and I would try to remember that art is art. I always go back to the feeling that I got as a kid with my brownie starmight and the pictures that I took and why. It helps me be myself with my own visions and thoughts. I really try to not let someone elses vision of art dictate what I see. I like your work. I keep trying to learn more about the technical functions of my camera and not the art part of things. Take a technically correct photo for the effect that you want but go back to your childhood with what you invision.

THANK YOU! you have made my day!, and thanks to all who replied and quite obviously viewed most of my work- as I can see the sudden increase in view counts.....I will sleep and dream happily tonight.
I'm not resting on my laurels though, as I am slowly planning some future shots in my garage- especially as the days are now growing shorter!
