Need some help and advice from the knowledgeable members. First let me say that about 80 to 90% of my photos are birds. Secondly is a list of lenses I now own. All are Nikon # 1 18-55 f\3.5-5.6 (kit), #2 55-200 f\4.5-5.6 (kit), #3 18-300 f\3.5-6.3, and #4 200-500 f\5.6, I also own a Nikon TC-14E II 1.4x Teleconverter. Now for the question, I am going to upgrade my D7100, and am thinking about a D7200 or D500. What does everyone think and why? Thanks for the help.

The D500 is your best choice for birds.

As already stated. The D500 is your best bet for birds. Along with the Nikon 200-500mm zoom lens. If your budget allows it? The D7200 is a satisfactory choice too. The D500 is the best crop sensor DSLR available today. Great in low light conditions and action sports, with quality fast lenses. Good luck.

How did you rule out the D7500? I am interested because I am trying to decide between the 500 and the 7500.

Go with the D500. Better auto focus, faster frame rate, better battery life. Any camera with a "Pet Portrait mode" should not be taken seriously.

Your best choices are Nikon D500 and Nikon D7500.

The D500 has fast fps, fast and accurate autofocus, good weathersealing, good in low light, large buffer and generally considered the best camera today for bird shooters, other brands included in that statement. There are many other advantages of the D500, too many to count for here.

The D7500 is a trimmed down version of the D500. It has the same sensor and resolution. The fps is slower, the buffer not as large, only one SD card, according to reviews the autofocus is not as accurate but still very good. The camera is made of more plastic and less metal. So the camera body is not quite as strong but lighter. This camera is a very good camera for birders and the main advantage over the D500 is the price.

The D7200 has one advantage over the other two, it has a bit more resolution but behind them in most or every other way which is quite normal as it is a few years older technology, kind of a one generation older camera.

Because while other cameras are trying to focus on erratic birds in flight the D500 is taking pictures of them.

Go with the D500. Better auto focus, faster frame rate, better battery life. Awesome when coupled with your 200-500 for birding. You will never regret getting the D500

The D7500 is a very good camera. Better than the D7200, despite it lacking two SD card slots. However, if you require a battery grip. The D7500 is not for you. Maybe third party grip available later on?

The D7500 only has 1 memory card slot. That is a show stopper for me.

With the D850, if within your budget, can be a part time D500 in DX mode - almost same # megapixels....but D500 will give best bang for the buck with BIF particularly.
