Hello there! I am new to the forum and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Martha and I am a hobbyist/enthusiast who enjoys mostly outdoor/nature photography and macro. I upgraded to a Nikon d7200 (body only) last year but kept my kit lenses from my d3200. I also have added, over the last few years, a few prime lenses which I love. My question is about replacing my kit lens (18-55 and 55-200). I am looking for a decent walk around/zoom lens that won’t break the bank. I am not sure what focal length is the best. The 24-75/80, 18-300? I do like beachscapes/landscapes but also love capturing birds, etc. Maybe I need two different lenses? If anyone has recommendations/advice, that would be great! I am not opposed to used lenses and have recently found a decent site for them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Martha. Welcome to the forum. Lots of helpful people here to answer most questions. As far as walk around lenses are concerned, I also have a d7200. I use the nikkor 18-200, great lens for aound $750 or so. I also have the sigma 10-20 for mostly inside and the sigma 150-600C for birding. I've had the 18-200 about 5 yrs and it still going strong. Good luck in your quest. Let us know what you end up with.

Welcome to the forum.

Wouldn't a "best" walk-around lens be an individual selection?
I consider a walk-around as the one that is on the camera most of the time.
I use an 18-200 as my walk-around. But that's my choice for the coverage. Others will use a different lens, based on their needs or desires.
After time, you'll probably figure out what kind of coverage you want or use the most. It could even wind up being two lenses.
(My 18-55 and 55-250 kits sit on the shelve now.)

Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. I am happy to hear about your 18-200 experience. If I could, I would have a wide angle and a telephoto but for now, I think it’s most important to have a walk around. I am always having to change lenses and would love the ease of one lens for traveling /day trips, etc. Thanks again! Nice to meet you!

I have a Tamron 18-270. Not too expensive and adequate for workarounds..at least for me with a limited budget

That makes sense to me too. Because I enjoy macro/close-up work, I tend to have my 50 and 90 on the most. I do use my kit lens when I am headed out just for a day trip, not necessarily a photowalk, so am looking to replace that focal length since mine is old and a little cracked:) It is probably not the lens I will use the most but one I would like to have in my bag, though. Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it!!

Welcome to the UHH. Nikon has two 18-300 the 3.5 5.6 is a little sharper, but a little heavy. The 28-300 is FF but sharper than the 18-300's works great on my D7200. For wildlife I use the Tamron 150-600 G2. Adorama, BH, KEH, Camera Cottage, Nikon sell refurbished lens.

I have read about that lens. Good to hear positive feedback on it! It is decently priced, too, which is what I need right now (I just had to replace my 90mm which I dropped a few months ago). Thank you so much for your reply-very helpful!!

I would agree with the above. It really is quite personal. I'd give thought to what you predominately shoot & go with the best choice for that majority. My "walk around" is a 24mm, but that's me, I like wide. You could just dedicate some outings with only one of what you already have with you for each day. Try them all on a single day, one by one. That way you can't switch around on a single day. Then sit back and review what you enjoyed & didn't so much. Perhaps you'd conclude you already own what suits you best. Experiment. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your reply! The 28-300 is not a bad idea, especially if one ever thought of upgrading to FF. Can I ask how wide that would be in a crop sensor? KEH is the site I recently discovered, by the way. A friend of mine got a refurbished Tamron 150-600 from there and it lives on her camera:))

Hi Martha...Welcome. Consider the 28-300 for it's quality and sharpness. Also consider the Nikon 200-500 for nature. I would then sell your 55-200 kit. Your 18-55 is a great walk around lens. Have fun and hope to see some of your images.

Welcome to the forum. My utility lens on both Nikon and Canon is my 28-300. Often when I'm on a photo safari I will lug two cameras, a crop body and a full frame. The full frame will have the 28-300 mounted and the crop (usually D7200) will have a 16-80. Other times the crop, a D500, will have the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary mounted. It's great for bringing fairly distant things up close and personal.

Wonderful advice-thank you so much!! I appreciate your thoughtful response. I guess because what I shoot most seems so limiting (50/90) I felt I needed something more adaptable on a day trip. But if I like a lot of bokeh and close-ups, maybe my day in the city or at the beach would be capturing those moments in the style I love most rather than the grand sweeping images I think I am supposed to get:))
