Trying to settle on a suitable lightweight lens for street photography in towns at night .

I use a 24-70 2.8 during the day but looking for a short zoom or fixed focal (around 35mm or 50mm maybe) with Vibration reduction for ease of use

Looking for the VR to try to keep the ISO down . Used to have a 50mm 1.4mm but ISO would creep up . Using a Nikon D850 and handholding with this beast is a bit of a problem , really need the VR . The law of unforeseen consequences are applying to this purchase .

Am I looking for something that does not exist ? Am I too stupid to own this camera? Time for a fully automatic point and shoot !!

I just got one. It took a month in shipping, but it works well. Cost me $65. Jupiter-12 on my Leica IIIf.

Tamron's new SP series prime lenses all have vibration compensation. I purchased the 45mm f/1.8 SP VC for my Nikons. They also have a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. I've used it for outdoor model photo shoots and street photography. The new lenses are the 35mm f/1.8, 45mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, and 90mm f/2.8 macro. B & H photo has an instant rebate going on now with 45mm f/1.8.

What are you considering high ISO? An 850 an handle nicely, as others, high ISO. Why handhold? maybe a monpod for versitility? I use a tripod for night shooting. Adds some inconvenience but can shoot ISO 100 unless movement.

A quick look on B&H shows that Tamron has a 35mm f/1.8 lens with image stabilization (VR) with a Nikon F-mount.

If you are looking for something smaller and lighter than your D850 for street shooting, look at the Fujifilm X100F. It has a 24mp APS-C sensor with a fixed 23mm (equivalent angle of view is 35mm) f/2 lens.

No problem
I think those Tamrons are what the op needs. Lightweight, sharp, good color rendering, wide aperture and image stabilizing and a very fair price. All he is asking for in one lens !! Usually one is not that lucky in finding the perfect lens.

Honestly I simply go for high ISO. Your camera would do well at high ISO. VR is good but personally I won't go for large aperture.

24-85 VR is relatively inexpensive and produces high quality images, but maybe too slow for your needs.

Might consider a D5600. The articulated screen means the camera can be used more unobtrusively than the tilt screen on the D850. The 24 on your 24-70 will be 36 equivalent on it. There is a new VR version of it.

The Sigma 17-50 f2.8 is VR and works great on DX cameras.

Have a look at a used sony rx100m3........it has f1.8 to 2.8 lens upto 24-70mm, tilting screen and is excellent in low light and you can put it in your top pocket...I have a d810 but tend to use the rx100m3 more for street photography when you dont want to be noticed
