I was watching a movie on TCM last night. they showed a short called duck and cover. what to do if "they" droped the atom bomb o us. when you see the flash, duck and cover. the short was shown in theaters and schools. later we came to see it as a joke. I remember the drills in high school. our high school genius brought tto our attention that when we saw the flash it was too late, and that the radiation would go through the school bricks and the hands or coats they suggested we cover our necks and head. it was an attempt to make us feel we had a chance of survival. a joke.
So much of what we were told "back then" was pure bunk.
I guess things haven't changed much.
Except maybe today it's even bunkier?

I read an article recently - considering the current state of world affairs - saying that duck and cover isn't such a bad idea, after all - depending on the situation.
EDIT: I found a similar, excellent article explaining the results of a hydrogen bomb detonation, and the benefits of duck and cover.

In the “good ole days” we were fed a lot of crap that was absolutely untrue. How about the tv ads depicting a doctor leaving the operating room and lighting up a Camel cigarette?
“9 out of 10 doctors prefer Camels. They are so smooth!”
I went to school in NYC during the 50s and 60s, and when I was in the 6th grade, I remember having a "drill." We were marched off to the hall by our teacher, and told to stay away from the windows.
I remember my friend Jeremy saying "Stay away from the windows? Hell, we're 6 miles from ground zero (Times Square,) we'll be vaporized!

No, it has nothing to do with radiation. It was advice to help you survive immediate injury from all the flying debris resulting from the explosive force,

During the Reagan administration, they advised digging a hole and covering it with a door as a way to survived Armageddon. I remember thinking it was pretty clever to get all those suckers to dig their own graves...

next to Santa Claus, I think one of my biggest disappointments was learning that there really is no Betty Crocker.
Actually, if you read about the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings, you will find out that depending on how close you are to the blast, and how big a blast, duck & cover might save your life. The ex-wife of a friend of mine survived Hiroshima, as did many others. Hell, it’s worth a try.
Do you know that 9 out of 10 doctors that have tried camels have switched back to women?
