A little bit of Kodiak

These pictures were taken on a trip to Kodiak, Alaska. The rush you get from being up close and personal with the largest land predator on Earth in its natural environment is impossible to describe. We were much closer to the cubs than we were to the boar. Their mothers were very tolerant. The water is the Pacific Ocean.

Curious but Apprehensive

Nice series.
The closest I want to get to one of those is looking at it's picture.

I wasn't too apprehensive. I was in a skiff about 5 yards off shore and the cub was under a bunch of overhanging bushes 5 yards from the water. Its mother was so worried about us that she didn't even look up from her fish about 50 yards to the cub's left. The bears were protected where we were and the experienced mothers knew we were not a threat.

Yes, a small RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat, for the uninitiated) piloted by a licensed Alaskan guide. We did go ashore at places and were within 15 feet of bears at times. We arrived right in the middle of one of the 7 salmon runs that happen every summer, so the bears were preoccupied.

I am sure that was what the boar was doing. In the last picture, the cub in the water was looking to see what its sibling on land was going to do. Predictably, when it glanced away, the one on the bank jumped right on top of it.

Thanks. You are not nearly as glad as I was. It was a great trip.
