Corel PSP 2018 problem

I was beginning to re-touch a scanned copy of a 70 year old photograph of my Mom using the Clone tool to cover some scratches on the photo. I selected a sampling location next to the scratch, right-clicked, and began left-clicking along the scratch. Instead of covering the scratch with the cloned pattern/imagery, there was a speckled mess each time I left-clicked. I tried this in several locations using appropriate clone selections and it always left those speckled patterns. What is strange is that I had used the clone tool on a digital photo a couple of days previous to this and it worked fine. Do some of these tools work differently on scanned images vs digital images? The Scratch Remover tool works OK but most of the scratches are irregular instead of a straight line and some are in areas of detail where the remove leaves some artifacts. Does anyone have any ideas on why the Clone Tool is doing what is shown in the cropped section of the photograph that I've included here?

I have had the same problem using Corel. My advice would be to use another program. My favorite is Paint.Net. It is a light program that is packed with tools. The only problem is it doesn't do RAW and the color correction could be better.

It does layers and cloning.

Did you try the scratch remover? It works for me.

Thanks for the suggestion, Joe. Deb, I’ve noticed that the Scratch Remover tool works well when the area is relatively uncluttered with a lot of detail. It doesn’t work so well if there is significant variation in the tones in the area of a scratch. I had high hopes for this Corel product but I’m beginning to feel a bit disappointed. I may spring for another Photoshop Essentials package. The one I had was lost when my old PC went belly up a few weeks ago.

Using what you posted I got the same results as you using 2018
I went back to the last version and it worked OK.

I think this is a glitch in the new software. Hopefully if enough people notify Corel they will fix it sooner rather than later.
