Would the Best APS-C camera, today, be the D7200, D7500, D500, 80D, 7D Mk II, a77 II, or the K-3II?

I know, it's a lotta choices, huh? ... The Nikons are many, which makes it a little tricky. The Canons are more cut and dried, I guess. And then you have Sony and Pentax.

I'm only familiar with Nikons. I have a D500. It's no doubt their top crop sensor camera. Its autofocus performance is superior to any other crop sensor Nikons. The D5 and D500 are the first two Nikons to have a dedicated processor solely for autofocus. I think the new D850 has that also. It has the best build quality, longest shutter life, and largest viewfinder of the Nikon DX cameras.

You know, CO ... the largest VF I've ever seen, or used - was the one in the D90. When, I found I had to return it, and eventually replaced it with the D7000 - naturally, I thought I'd be getting the SAME VF, and was quite disappointed to find it wasn't nearly as large as the one in its immediate predecessor - which, kinda - shocked me ....

Now, you're telling me the VF in the D500 is pretty big, too. Do you have any comparative numbers that'd make sense to a poor old novice like me?

Sorry, but I'll stick with my D7100 because I'm so familiar with it; but, if someone wanted to give me a D500, I could talk myself into accepting it (let's be honest; I'd gladly accept a D7200, but not a D7500).

I had a D90 and I still have a D7000. The D90 has 96% coverage and 0.94x magnification with 50mm lens. The D7000 has 100% coverage and 0.94x magnification with a 50mm lens. The D500 has 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification with 50mm lens.

Yeah, me, too ... I'd gladly take a D500, OR a D7200 ... but not a D7500 ... too many compromises in that one ...

For me, though, actually, as already being an owner of the D7100 ... the D7200 doesn't really offer a whole lot more, when it comes right down to it, now, does it, Bill?

CO ... thanks for that ... but coverage figures don't really explain why the D90's VF is so much bigger than the one in the D7000 ... nor the D500, for that matter ...

I'm making reference to the actual SIZE of the glass VF you look through ... I'd equate the one on the D90 as being like being in a touring van with a glass roof!!!!

I have a Canon 80D and a T5 and my wife has a T6i. While any of them is a great camera, the moron behind the viewfinder is the most important part of the equation.

I’m not sure what all the differences are, but I’ve heard there are not enough to justify replacement. On the other hand, if anyone offers me a D7200, well, I wouldn’t mind having a backup.

What criteria would should we use, Sensor? Functionality? Availability of lenses? Anything else?

I’d say out of these cameras, the best is the one that is used by the best photographer.

"Justify replacement" ???

I don't think so, Bill ... add-on, maybe ... but, replacement? ... Unless you mean as Top Dog ... and then the D7100 would back up the D7200 ... that'd work!

All I've heard about is - the bigger buffer, Bill ....

Perhaps, that's important enough to some - to justify replacing the D7100 - but, not - to me ...

I don't use the high-speed function anyway ....

Why do you always have to make things so complicated, Mark?

If you can't give a straight answer ... just abstain!

Tom ... I'd like to think - the best - is the one which the most folks SAY is the best ...

Make sense?

No, who are those folks Chris? Casual snapshot shooters who frequent message forums? I would take their opinions with a big block of salt.

Give a talented photographer a camera with a 1” sensor, give me a medium format camera. Who’s photos do you think you are going to admire? Not mine with the best equipment.
