Is there a filter specifically for lens protection? If so , is it used over a UV filter? Thanks

Take a look at this thread, and look at some of the videos, especially the one by Steve Perry: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-491954-1.html

On a digital camera you do not need an Ultra violet filter as the cameras sensor already blocks UV Light.
A glass lens filter protector however will protect the filter thread of your lens.

Forget about a UV filter; you want a clear glass filter. The only protective one is the Sigma Ceramic filter. Use that together with a lens hood and you've done the maximum in protection. https://www.dpreview.com/news/5587130142/sigma-demos-wr-ceramic-lens-filter-strength-with-impact-test

Yep. How unfortunate. Some folks like to step in the same pile of sh*t over and over again.

That depends on what you mean by "protection."

The best lens protection is to keep it in the bank. Just kidding! Take care of your gear and use the lens cap and lens shade with each use...and do not forget to remove the lens cap to take pictures.

To each his own. I have a UV/Haze filter on every one of my lenses, I shoot with the lens hood on and the lens cap is on the lens at all times when not shooting.
