For Canon 7D mii users and anyone with a working knowledge of this camera

I recieved my Canon 7D mii about a wk ago through ebay. What a difference over my 40D. Looking fwd to grandkids sporting events. I went through and did some setups but have a couple questions.
1. While in Menu mode, the multi controller moves you across the top of the menu mode screen moving the controler to the 3 or 9 position to move E or W. Then N & S pushing the controller to 12 or 6. Problem I'm having is the 3 & 9 don't move me to the next mode until I go completely through each file in the current mode, then it will change to the next mode. In my older 20D and 40D, by moving the controller 3 & 9 would move me across the the various mode types. The roller would move files within each mode type. I'm thinking that there is a function/setup button that will correct this.

2. While in camera live mode, viewing on the LED monitor, once I take a photo it appears on the monitor but is not saved to my CF card. I only have a CF card installed. Is there also a function/setup I need to do to save camera live views onto my CF card or do they get saved onto a SD card?

My worries about the Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens not working with the 7D, works just fine.

Any suggestions to my 2 problems mentioned above or other useful tips with the 7D on sporting events indoor, basketball & wrestling to outside, football & soccer day and night games would be appreciated.

Thanks to all the previous support from UHH followers helping me using my 40D for my grandsons football games. I'll get plenty of practice with the 7D in between now and next high school football season.

I’m a little confused by both questions here. I thought I knew my 7D Mkii inside-out, upside-down... but your questions aren’t sparking anything in my brain? I may need to be at home, with the camera in-hand, to try to replicate your actions & then get a handle on the questions.

In the meanwhile, is it possible that you purchased the camera second-hand (you mention eBay?), and that therefore a good starting point might be to reset to Factory Settings? At least then the User Guide supplied with the camera will make sense (I found the User Guide very effective for quickly giving me a working understanding of all the main features).

To navigate between the menu tabs, use the [Q] button.

Regarding the live view issue, this may help: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3812895.

No manual with it? From e-bay, was it used? If it was the previous user must have changed a lot of settings around and you will need to go back to factory default and start over. Plus you used 7DII in your title but then keep calling it a 7D, which model is this, the original or the mk II?

Here is a downloadable PDF of the manual:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/5/0300016615/01/eos7d-mk2-im-en.pdf
and the special manual just for the AF system: http://downloads.canon.com/camera/brochures/EOS_7D_Mark_II_AF_guide_CUSA_9-2014.pdf

When in menu you go left to right from one menu to another with the "main dial" and go up or down on the individual menus with the "quick control dial" and you can go left to right at any time without worrying where you are with the quick control. However when you are in a sub menu the fastest way to get out of it is just hit "menu" again, you will go one level back up until you leave menu altogether. Yes, there are 2 or 3 other ways but this is the basic one.

Put in an SD card also and turn off the shutter release with no card. You can change where images get stored. Card 1 - CF, Card 2 - SD, Both (you now have a backup set in case of a bad card), and even split when doing RAW+JPEG and have one format on one card and one on the other. I almost always did RAW only and had it set to record to the CF and use the SD for spill over if the CF got full and I didn't notice. You also might want to have one or two sets of extra cards since 10 fps can fill up a card fast at a sporting event. I used 32 GB high speed cards in both the CF and SD slots.
When I had a 7DII I started with these settings from Photography Life and modified them:

If I understand your first question correctly, I think you are experiencing Canon's newer menu system where there are multiple screens under each of the main items. Earlier Canon cameras didn't have this same functionality (probably because there were less options at the time). For example there are (off the top of my head without the camera in hand) several screens just for the AF functions of the camera, but only one main menu icon at the top. As far as I know you need to move through each of them every time you move across the menu items. I like to set up the "MyMenu" with those I change often. If I remember correctly the 7DII allows at least two "MyMenu" screens. This limits the amount of movement through the menus to get to the ones I use often. I think Canon designs their menu system so as not to embed menus down several layers deep.

I suggest you reset the camera to the default settings. Then I suggest you go to the Canon website and download the latest firmware for your camera and do the update. Then it should work like a brand new camera. Moving the multi controller left right should move left to right when looking at the menus. Up down does the same. Q button will toggle from left to right through the menu headings. Camera in LiveView will take and save a picture. You need to check the camera to see which card you have selected and which file format for the camera to save each file. In other words, you should see that the CF card is selected and that a small, medium or large jpg or raw or both are being recorded. Check your menus. Download the manual. Go to Youtube and look up that model and there are a lot of good videos on how to use menus.

Again, reset camera and update the firmware.
