If you want to stay with a cropped sensor the Canon 7D Mk.2. or 80D would be good.

When you narrow down your choices, read some comparisons.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

7D2 or 5D3 (or 5D4) depending on what, if any, lenses you have and your budget. If you have EF-S lenses and are unwilling to sell them and re-purchase EF (full frame) lenses, then the 7D2 is a nice move up. Or if you already have EF lenses and it fits your budget, either the 5D3 or 4 have very similar controls and operation and is built like your 7D.

Why limit yourself to Canon...plenty of other (hint, better) camera/models out there. Heck even Canon themselves have admitted to not being very innovative lately...

Hi there.I part exd my 7d Mk1 for the 80d. The body is a bit smaller so check it out if you have big hands. It also has an articulated screen - very handy if you've got arthritic knees! It's a bit lighter and I love it. Stick a "nifty fifty" on the front and youl'd hardly know you had a camera. All the best
Pete

He may have a significant investment in Canon lenses and other gear.

but we don't know...he said "used to own"...that to me means he's likely starting from scratch. Personally if I were starting from scratch, it wouldn't be Canon. They're not innovative enough for me.
