The first time I saw a female towhee, I thought I had another species. Then looked up in my id book and found out the species is dimorphic.

We have them here in Tennessee. They like to stay on the ground at the edge of the woods.
Their color is quite unique and beautiful. One of my favorite.

We have lots of spotted towhees in Oregon. Particularly west of the Cascades as they winter on the warmer side at lower elevations. They're busy little bug eaters. Nice catch!

They do a Nice little dance when hunting for food in the dead leaves. Nice song too.

I know the dance you're talking about. They jump on the ground cover with both feet and pull back with both feet simultaneously to expose bugs or seed. Very cool. vz

Nice eye and beak detail. It's amazing when you really look at how complex each bird's beak is and its relationship to their food choices.

I'm curious. From the shot angle it looks like you were on the ground. We're you in a hide or bling waiting for him? How far out was he?
