Recently I bought the Canon 7d Mark II and the Tamron 150-600 G2. I know this is not
a new subject but I’ve had lens focusing issues. Works great when it does. But today I
was shooting a beautiful bald eagle...he was a long ways off but the 600 brought it in
but not super close. But on full 600 I could not get the lens to auto focus. Tried all I knew
to try but but still didn’t get a sharp photo. Any advice on how to make this work?

What focusing mode were you using on the camera?
Also, did you have the lens focus limiter set to less than infinity?
Jerry if I recall their was a lot of people complaining when Tamron's version 1 came out. That the 7Dii would stay locked on with a single point in servo mode. I had this issue with my 7Dii right out of the box and sent it to Canon with my new 70-200 and the fixed it. No clue as to what they did. Don't know if this fits your situation.
Thank you for your input.
Just to mention, but most telephotos have trouble focusing on distant objects. Especially when there is confusing material around the subject. Grass, branches, and the like can confuse the camera. Even low contrast can confuse the sensor.
Just a suggestion, as I don't know all the particulars in your case, but have you tried to manual focus in situations like that?
Yes I tried manual focus but there’s such a fine line to get the bird manual focus.
Had the same problem with my Tamron 150-600g2 for Nikon right out of the box. Returned it to the store and it was replaced with another. This one seemed to work for a few weeks and then developed the same issues. Replaced it with Nikon 200-500 and have no had any issues with that lens. I agree with Joe Blow's comment regarding confusing material and contrast around subject however if you are shooting in flight against the sky that should not be an issue. My experience with Tamron products has been hit or miss.
Was the lens hunting and not locking focus or is it that the image of the eagle just isn’t sharp? If it is the later, it can probably be attributed to atmosphere distortion. Heat waves, humidity, smog, etc... will all affect the sharpness of an image especially when using a long lens from a long distance.

Turn off the focus limiter.
I also think it might be the focus limiter switch on the lens is on. It needs to be set to 10 meters to infinity for far distance.
Thanks much for your help...I’ll try that.
Thank you for responding....I’ll check that.
