Supermoon over Superstition Mtn. (PL)

The timing would be just about perfect if I could have cloned myself to running three cameras at the same time. The final Supermoon of 2017 was scheduled to rise above Superstition Mountain outside of Apache Junction, AZ just prior to 5:30 PM, about the same time that the sun was scheduled to set beyond South Mountain behind me and to catch the "Pink Mountain" phenomenon (that's when the Mountain takes on the brilliant colors of the setting sun). With two camera's on tripods aimed at the moonrise and one handheld camera tracking the sunset, it got pretty hectic for the final few moments.

The panorama was caught on my Canon EOS M3 with a Canon 70-300 mm at 70 mm, ISO 200, f/8, 1/15 sec. This is a three-shot Pano with the camera in Landscape orientation. The three shots were stitched in Google's ICE. The light layering of clouds prevented the moon from showing off its usual detail.

Happy New Year to all the Hogs out there and I hope you have a fun year of chasing your favorite shots.

All of January is going to be 'big' moon watching owing to moon/earth orbital factoids. Those blessed with great observational locations are urged to publish their moon gems.

Very nice. I know the area well.

I'm not sure which would have been more enjoyable to watch, the moon rise, the sunset, or you frantically trying to capture both.

Thanks Bob, I was doing okay until the mountain began to change color, the locals around here say, "When the mountain turns pink, it's time for a drink." And I just ran out of hands... lol

Nice - as well as the ingenuity you used to capture the scene

Great shot! Thanks for the informative narrative also. I agree with Bob, it would have been great fun to watch all this in action.

Thanks for looking UTMike, I'm just glad that I was in Arizona and not somewhere in the cold country.
