I am looking at new cameras, nikons. is there alot of difference from D90, D5000, to D5100?
This will be my first major purchase, and i love to do freelance photography, and photograph people in their natural habitat rather than still poses.

We have some outstanding Nikon experts on this forum, but, with all due respect, they can be more helpful if you will do a bit of research into the features you want or need, go to a camera shop and handle a few models, and then get back to us with some more specific questions. Thank you.

You have a Wolf Camera & Video in Gainesville. I suggest you visit them to see the cameras you mentioned, find the one that fits your hand best, then do on-line research (price, features, etc.) and comparison of the cameras and make a decision.

Mdbullock,
Of the 3 Nikons you listed, the newest one is the D5100 but it's been out about a year now, give or take. All three are highly regarded but if I were to rank them myself, I would say that the D5000 is third, the D90 is second, and the D5100 is first, based upon all the reviews I've read. But you need to do your own search, go to a store and handle all three, and see which one seems to be "the one." The D5100 has received many accolades, including Best Entry-level Camera by several sites. I own one and got it with the kit lens, a 55-300mm lens, a 40mm macro lens, filters for all of the lenses, bag, and tripod for about $1300.00. The camera captures great, detailed, colorful photos----you just simply cannot go wrong in having it.

Have never owned any of those - started with D70s, then D200 then D300 and D3. Each upgrade was because the camera I had lacked or was short on something I wanted to do. Now have D800 to replace the 300 & 3. In each upgrade, I wanted better focus and better capture of detail to capture dragon and damesel flies doing hwatever they do (fly, eat, mate, etc.) and the detail of my collector marbles (see my avatar). I'm not rich but I can't take it with me! So, what do you want to do and which has the features that will help you do it?

The articulated LCD is a nice feature, too.

If you decide on the D5100, don't rule out factory refurbished. I saved about $100 on my D5100 that way.

If you decide to visit Wolf Camera to investigate the features and applications, you will be on your own! Don't ask questions; their personnel would not know how to answer you. Wolf/Ritz... enough has been said about these companies.

The D90 has a motor to focus lenses without one. For that reason I would not buy the other two. Lots of used lenses without motors and they are getting cheaper and cheaper since the auto focus will not work on the new loer end Nikons. All three will take great pictures. - Dave

You may find a smaller camera is better for street photography. People won't notice it as much as you will look less like a professional photographer. You might want to see Frank Doorhof's video about this before you buy anything. Go to: http://www.frankdoorhof.com/site/ Then scroll down to: Episode 1 of the DOORhof is always open. At the end of that section is a place to click to start the video.

Hope this helps, Tom Hudson

You can look at this online article and see if it helps your decision at all?
Hope it helps. I've heard good things from owners of the D5100. Look into construction materials of your potential cameras. I am a fan of aluminum and magnesium construction materials being used. Gosh, I wish I were in that phase of searching for the right camera! How fun..

Rent cameras before you put out big money. Then buy the one that fits you needs. I like Canon for all the lens that fit Canon. And the help after the sale. Good luck.

Yes, give the Wolf a try. Once upon a time I worked for Wolf - before the FIRST bankruptcy. I know there has been a lot of discussion about Wolf / Ritz on UHH and a lot of it is true. HOWEVER, the manager in Gainesville GA is (I believe) the same guy who has been with Wolf for probably 15 or more years; he was my manager when I worked in the Gainesville store. His name is Bob Dew and he is one of the good guys. He will tell you the truth and will not mislead you with bad or false information. He is extremely knowledgable about everything since he has been doing this for many years. Please visit the store and tell him that you heard he would treat you right from one of his former employees. Remember to ask for Bob - I am not sure about anyone else there. Good Luck with your decision.
