My version of Lightroom (non CC version but the standalone version) is current but I am not able to import the raw files from the new a7Riii. Is anyone else having this issue or have any knowledge about it?

I believe that the A7Riii was not added until LR Classic CC so you will need to use the DNG converter to import your files. It is free.

I hope and think that Rick is incorrect.

This chart tells you what you need. https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

It appears that your camera was added to 6.14 which was the last update to the stand alone LR.

This will be interesting because Adobe pronounced support was ending the last day of last year. This is the first day of this year! My understanding is that LR6 (stand alone) was not being killed, just that there would be no further ACR or bug fix updates. I think if you go to the Help menu and pick Update, it will go to 6.14 and you should be working.

Thanks for those tips. I had already tried using DNG but to no avail.

However, even though when I go to check for updates, Lightroom says I am current. But when I check version, I am still on version 6.13 instead of 6.14. I haven’t found a way to upgrade to 6.14.

"I had already tried using DNG but to no avail." That's because "DNG Converter" is a separate, independent program. You use it to convert your Sony files to a different, more compatable, still RAW, format with a .DNG file name.

There are several things to try. First, try logging out and back into your Adobe account via the Help menu. Then try the Help>Update choice.

If that doesn't work there are a couple other things to try, including a direct download: http://swupdl.adobe.com/updates/oobe/aam20/win/AdobeLightroom-6.0/6.14/setup.zip

That link comes from here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/keeping-lightroom-up-to-date.html
...and here: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-downloads.html

If you still can't get it to work, there are two other forums that soley focus on LR user to user help.

Thank you very much. That did the trick. I was able to update to 6.14, then import some raw files. I guess on my next camera upgrade, I’ll have to give up the standalone version.

Which trick? The log out and in or the direct download?

Full disclosure: In my secret internet life I have been anointed with the title of "Adobe Community Professional" or "ACP". It came because I was recognized by Adobe as being able to write answers on their forums. In return they give me free software.

It is important to me that you understand that you DO NOT need to abandon LR6 if you buy a new camera. Yes, I think the CC plan is a good bargain. Adobe would like you to subscribe. But Adobe also works at providing tools to keep you running with what you have.

The "DNG Converter" is kept current with all the software that works with RAW from all the cameras that shoot it. You may not have used it correctly. But when you buy the A7Riv next year, you can use the DNG Converter to copy and convert your files to a RAW format that your then "old LR6" will do fine with. Adobe moves foward, but they don't force anybody to do anything.

People are buying new cameras all the time and still using their old favorite versions of Adobe software.

Thanks bsprague. We are fortunate to have you and other experts here to help us with our problems and curiosities.

The “trick” that worked was getting to the helpx.adobe.com site and finding the download for Lightroom 6.14. My previous searches seemed to always take me to an area where it seemed the only option was Lightroom CC. I am still curious why Lightroom said my software was up to date when it really wasn’t.

You should look at Capture One. The CO Express (Sony) is free. The CO Pro (Sony) is a lot less money than the Pro version for all cameras.
