Teleconverters with Canon 70-200mm f4 IS L USM?

I would like to extend the reach of my 70-200mm lens instead of the added expense of longer and more expensive lenses just to use a few times. Should I buy Canon teleconverters or will any of the less expensive brands work just as well? Is there a real difference, besides the brand name, between Canon extenders and others like those made by Kenko? Have you used extenders on this lens and are you satisfied with the results?

Stick with the Canon. You won't regret it. Figure the cost over the lifetime of the extender.

In most cases the cheaper brands will not fit or may damage the lens, and a TC will change your Aperture, by 1.4 or 2.0, so a 2x extender makes an f/4 Aperture an f/8.0, which may affect AF depending on your camera.

I shoot a Canon 6D II with the 70-200 f4. Will the less expensive Kenko, Sigma or Tamron extenders degrade the image the same or more than the Canon extender?

I have the same lens, and bought a Viltrox converter. Sharpness was diminished, and the stabilization did not work correctly. Replaced it with a Canon, and will not make that mistake again.

What I have read to date is that the x1.4 works fine but there are issues with x2.0 (i.e. AF does work and as mentioned above you will loose significant light).
Thus I have not bought?

I have the 1.4II, and the focus is slowed a bit, but still works. I've used a Canon 2.0 tele, and AF still works, but is less sure, and even slower.

To be CLEAR: adding a 2x to an f/4 lens will push it to f/8 and that combination on the EOS 6D II will autofocus only via the center AF point.

Also as pointed out by others, the non Canon 1.4x models are a pennywize and three pounds foolish where Canon really outshines the others.

There has not been a teleconverter produced that will improve IQ. Sorry. They all degrade to a degree, the more powerful the teleconverter, the more the loss in IQ. My Nikon 200-500 becomes effectively a 300-750 on my D500. If I need longer, I will buy a telescope.

Between the Canon MIII converters and off brand is like putting a coke bottle bottom between your lens and camera with off brands.
Check the MTF charts for use with the MIII converters and you will see.

I was able to find at a local Camera Store used Canon 1.4 and 2.0 TCs. I have used the 2.0 on a Canon 200mm 2.8 lens (NO IS) with excellent results on a heavy tripod since there is no IS. The results were fantastic. Check out your local Camera Stored for used TCs and never look back.

I bought the much less expensive Kenko 1.4x Tele converter Pro 300 DG several years ago and have used it successfully with the lens you have. No focus problems, with a one stop loss. But the best news is that unlike a Canon (I believe), this TC works with other lenses. I use it on a Canon 60D with a Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 while walking around without the heavy tele and it works just fine. Same for other lenses. Makes it a 38-112 mm equivalent so with this TC in my pocket I can quickly have a range of 27-112 mm f/2.8-f/4. Perfect.
