I'm hoping someone can point me to a source for a quick release assembly (plate and camera mount insert) that can be mounted onto a vintage 1/4-20 screw tripod head. I can't seem to find anything using Google nor searching on B&H as well. Does such an animal exist?

I have a vintage Welt tripod that is very sturdy and in great shape, but I would like to make mounting and un-mounting the camera a bit less tedious. Thanks for any help y'all can provide.

Any of the new ones should work. You may need a 5/16 - 1/4 inch adapter.

Manfrotto makes 323 RC2 system Quick release base and it uses RC2 Quick release plates and they are reasonable in cost. Adorama sells them and I imagine that B & H does too.

I think you mean a 3/8-16 to 1/4-20 adapter?

Having never seen one of these first hand, I didn’t think these quick release assemblies would attach to a vintage tripod head platform by way of the 1/4-20 thumb screw. I’m feeling a bit dim-witted. Thank you all for your assistance.

There are multiple makes out there, Pentax alone has three different ones!

Bill_de Sorry if I seem 'picky' but I think you may mean a 3/8" to 1/4" bush. A 5/16" to 1/4" would fall apart as the threads would cut through due to their depth.

I've used the Manfrotto pair on all my tripods. There are also third party products at lower cost.

A ball head would screw on to your tripod and you could go from there to plates and clamps. Stay with Arca Swiss; there are many plates that look like Arca Swiss but have slightly different widths. If you get a screw type clamp, you probably won't have a problem tightening a non-Arca plate BUT if you opt for a lever type clamp, you most likely will have trouble.

Arca-Swiss, the best way to go.
