Don't know the Mac terminology, but in Windows: attach iPhone to computer vis USB cable > a folder will appear in File Explorer > open the folder and find your photos > copy photos to a new folder on computer > import photos into Lightroom.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work with the new format, or at least it hasn't for me. My current method is to use Windows Photo to import the images (after plugging in the iPhone/iPad) to a folder on my hard drive, then import to LR from there.
My understanding is that the format will be supported in the near future with an update to Windows.

Looking into it, looks like apple photos can export a 16 bit tiff file.
So import to Apple photos which to be fair is the apple preference for us to do anyway and export a 16 bit tiff to lightroom.
as Heic is a 10 bit format using 16 bit tiff will keep the data accuracy rather than chopping it down to 8 bit prior to editing it.
Still cofused. HEIC photos a already dinked to the Mac. How do you change them to a 16 tic file and get them into Lightroom 6 ? Do you change the format to DNG or leave them as a tiff file ?

Photos will take them in as Heic format, so export as tiff files to preserve the 10 bits per channel and work on the tif as if it was a raw file. you could convert the tiff to dng but its not necessary and may not be much difference in size.

I was able to use this method to transfer pictures between my computer and a Droid / Windows phone, but not an iPhone - have you successfully used this method with an iPhone??

This is how I always did it, until the new file structure. Then no files appeared for copy, even though I knew they were there.

You can reset your iPhone to do this, or so it appears. I'm not familiar with the problem but my iPhone 8Plus simply downloaded them to my LR as usual. Here is one link and I'm sure there are several other places that talk about this. I did change this setting in my iPhone prior to downloading and maybe that is why I had no problem.

iPhones have become more and more sealed - today they want you to have no direct access to the battery or to the memory. The simplest way to access pictures is through iCloud or by emailing them from the iPhone to somewhere else. I don't have a modern iPhone, but my understanding is that if you get to pictures via an approved interface {such as iCloud or email}, they will automatically convert them to JPEGs for you.
