Experience with the new Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2

I recently purchased the new Tamron 24-70 G2 and found it giving me soft focus results especially at f2.8. I used my D7200. Brought the camera and lens to the store I bought it from and they came up with the conclusion my D7200 was having focusing issues. Sent it to Nikon for service. The store lent me a D750 and when I shot with it and the Tamron 24-70 I still had soft focus at f2.8. Tested some of my other lenses (60mm 2.8, 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR) both fx lenses. both were sharp on with focus with the D750 and also my D7200. Focusing was with AFS single point for all shots at approximately 4 feet and at f2.8 when possible with the lens. My question - has anyone else had this experience with the Tamron lens? Is there a problem with Tamron's focusing mechanism in its lens or is this the best I can expect from a 24-70 zoom given the distance from subject and the f-stop. By the way all shots were on a tripod with VR off. Thank you for any comments.

You have a long warranty with Tamron. You should send it into them with a thorough explanation of your experience just as you have done here.

I have the Tamron 28-300 and experienced soft focus issues with it on all my cameras. I sent it back to them. It came back better (after a VERY long time), but still not perfect. However others get really good results from their Tamron lenses. So I guess it's just some of them.

Thanks for the advice but the store took it back with full refund. I am hoping there was nothing wrong with my D7200. Time will tell. Thanks again.

Thanks AZPICLADY. My first non Nikon lens purchase. Maybe I will stick to Nikon.

Let me start by saying that I do not use zooms in that focal range. When the Tamron team was here in Miami in October for a workshop I attended and I saw several shots made with the 24-70 and they looked great BUT, several users have described issues with their samples regarding its AF.
The fact that focus was fine with your other lenses even when you used the D750 clearly tells me that the problem is the 24-70. I would not be surprised if Nikon sends you the D7200 back stating the camera works to specs.
Ideally your D7200 and the Tamron should go to tune the AF of the lens to the camera. Nikon is not going to fall for it so you will have to depend on Tamron but that would make me nervous because if the AF of the camera is altered in any way it could affect focus with your other lenses.

Thanks camerapapi, would not let Tamron do anything to my D7200. The lens and others have gotten great reviews from other fellow photographers so at this point it is a guessing game. we'll see what Nikon has to say about my D7200.

Hi, After my experience with the Tamron 18-270 I will be much more careful in the future if I ever get near Tamron again...

I have always recommended to use lenses made by the camera manufacturer. Independent lens maker have in the majority of the cases attractive prices and optics not manufactured by the OEM. You could be happy with a generic lens but also you could not.
When you buy a lens made by your camera company you know the lens will work to perfection. It is possible that it does not although that is not common but you do know for sure that you will get a new lens or the present lens repaired to specs.
As I said, the chances are excellent your Tamron needs focus adjustment.

I purchased this lens approximately 2 months ago and couldn't be happier. Extremely sharp with no focus issues. Sounds like you may have a "bad copy". The rap on Tamron is their quality control is just not where it should be. Use that warranty.

Tamron and Tokina 24-70s are better and considerably less expensive than the Nikon. Don't allow this one bad experience turn you into a Nikon fan boy or girl and deprive your photography of some of the best lenses out there, many of which just happen to be third party.

Thanks for the input, JimBob. Maybe my camera has issues. It was sent to nikon for a check on the autofocus. The store tried another Tamron 24-70. Had the same issue, so maybe the camera. Time will tell when I get my camera back. But like I said before, the store gave me a D750 as a loaner and it too had the same problem. That's why I returned the lens.

Had a Tamron 24-70 2.8 lens that I bought because of price. Could not afford the Nikon lens at that time. Traded it on used Nikon 24-70 2.8 non vr lens. Surprised at how big difference in picture quality, the Nikon was just so much better. Some users might get a good Tamron lens but seems inconsistent and luck of the draw. My experience is the glass does matter and that is why I stay with Nikon lens. Cost more but worth the price.

Was thinking about doing exactly as you stated. Just waiting to see the results on my camera.

I must be one of the lucky ones because my Tamron 24-70 is extremely sharp. It's my "go to" lens on my FF camera.
