Which of these lens focal lenghts do you think is best for general walk around photography 35, 50, or 85. I was also looking at the 35-70mm zoom lens. The most I can spend is $500.00 I will look at other recommendations. I shoot outside most of the time during the day from dawn till dusk. My current lens are 105 f2.8 micro and 300mm f4.

Look at the Nikon 28-105. Very good lens and cheap.

The old Nikon AF 35-70mm F2.8 can be found well under $500 in EX+ Cond. It is an excellent lens at was part of Nikons original "Holy Trio". For the prime I recommend the Nikon 50mm F1.4, or if your budget allows it, the Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART.

That is an excellent choice! It was in fact the first lens I bought when the D3 first came out.

However, I had two problems with it. I needed a wider range, but there wasn't much available. The killer was that it exhibited really horrible flare if I shot someone with a brightly illuminated outside window behind them. I was doing that every weekend at the time so it had to go.

It was replaced with a Tamron 28-135mm. Nice range but not wide enough. Maybe not as nice for bokeh either.

Then Nikon came out with the 24-120mm f/4. That has been a great lens for my needs every since. I would recommend picking up a used one.

That said, the 28-105mm does have some good features (a close focus "macro" mode). It might be worth while to find one of each!

I am using the Tamron SP 24-135 as my walk-about lens. And I always get great results with my Nikon 28-105.

if the only two that you have is a 105 macro and a 300mm F 4, that is not much to work with, D3 should be a full frame, correct me if it's not, I would go with some thing in the 24-70mm range, good luck getting some thing for 500$ unless it's used or rebuilt.

I completely agree with this. I still own & use a 35-70D I bought new decades ago. It remains wonderful. It is heavy, certainly compared to a 35 or 50 prime. Beware of that if that’s an issue for you when doing walkabouts. It’s not one of the newfangled plastic jobs that feel like a marshmallow in your hand.

I shoot Canon -- So I had to look your camera up & since it's a Full Frame that of course means Prime Lenses to me -- I can then recommend what I use & consider an outstanding "walk around lens" with my Canon 5D2 & 5DS --- Go out & get -- One of the best or close to the best 35mm 1.4's that Nikon offers -- If you do that you end up with a friend for life

Its still lighter than the Sigma 50mm F1.4 ART lens.

If you don't need fast glass, it may be worth checking out B&H used. There is a Nikon FX AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens for $350.

A 50mm is what I use most on my full frame Df.

For a prime lens under $500, I would look at Nikon 50mm, various flavors and the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 (weather sealed and VR)
