I have been using the MeFoto Global Traveler, aluminum for about two years. A little heavy side at just under 4 lbs but folds up really well into a small package. Cannot recommend it enough! It has been on TWO extended over seas trips (total 5 months), used it heavy wind, blowing rain,, snow, dust, and always worked well. VERY stable. The included ball head is also a keeper. Can hold up to 26 lbs. Running between $170-200 at B&H, Amazon, usual suspects. They also sell a lighter weight version at about $120. That one holds 15 lbs +/-. Good luck.

Because the Admin moved the first one into Links and Resources. Is that a problem?

Have some loose cash after the holidays and thought a decent tripod may be in order. Since the last tripod I purchased was from KMart back at least 30 years ago I need some direction. I'm not going anywhere too adventurous but I would like a decent all-around tripod without spending much more than $200, head included. Light weight is definitely a consideration. The heaviest camera lens combo I own is less than 4 lb. Any advice is appreciated.

On this forum, look up "Gene51." His advice on tripods is right on from a point of physics. I wish I had seen his advice before I purchased an Altura tripod. I later got a Feisol tripod he recommended. I still have a good, but not light, tripod in my 70's Leitz Tiltall. (Manufactured by Tiltall not Leitz.) It is a great tripod. You may be able to find one used on EBay for a small amount of money.

Good Luck!!

For about $400 I got an Induro that is quite sturdy that I use on lenses up to 100-400 Canon lens. It seems to be quite sturdy.

Take your camera to a camera store and try several of them. Manfrotto, Vanguard MeFoto all have combinations for under 200.00. Vanguard has a rebate offered right now and so does MeFoto. You have a light system but you need to be confident in you choice.

I use a Neewer 72" carbon fiber. It is light but very strong. I purchased it from Amazon for less than $100.00

I want to thank all of the members who responded here. After mulling over my options I decided to go with the prevailing opinion of heavier is better. I purchased a used Manfrotto 190 Pro and a Bogen/Manfrotto 3030, also used. On the heavier side but as someone pointed out in another thread, I'll just have to suck it up and lay off the cheeseburgers. Thank you all again and Happy New Year!

By the way this outfit cost about $100. Legs from KEH and the head from ebay. If I need to upgrade it wont sting as much as the $200 I was originally going to spend. Something tells me I may be looking for a better head though but we'll see.
