D5600 touch screen

I have a refurb D5600 coming to replace my D5300. The main attraction was the touch screen. If you’ve used it I’d appreciate learning anything you’d care to share.

Specifically would like to know about experience with using a glass screen protector on it.

I’m also open to any other comments/advice on the D5600.

FYI I also have a D800 and Panasonic Lumix GM5. The latter has a touch screen and is one of the things that motivated me towards the D5600. I have all the lenses I need.

I have the D5500 and bought the ProOPTIC Glass Screen Protector for the Nikon D5300 & D5500. I assume this company makes one for the D5600 (not sure if this one fits the D5600).

I am STILL very happy with it almost a year later. My review of it is listed as ‘The Most Popular Positive Review’ on the link below. It works, and is easy to clean without fear of scratching anything.

Thanks!

If it allows the D5500 touch screen to work it should be fine.

How have you found using the touch screen? Any tips?

Most of the time I just use the regular controls (Arrows and OK), but on occasion I do use the touch screen. picking colors for Selective Color is probably when I use the touch screen the most, followed by In Camera Overlay, and In Camera Raw Editing, which isn't a huge amount of time.

I do use the swing out option almost all of the time, shooting from different angles (Very low to the ground, or over my head), and the amount of information I can get from the screen is a lot easier to read than what I get through the viewfinder.

Nice option (Touch Screen) when you need it, but most of the time, for me anyway, it's like having an extra trigger on a gun, when one will suffice.

I too like the maneuverable screen on the D5xxxs. This will be my third. I use it frequently. Interesting how many who haven’t learned to use it dis it. And how they assert it is something to break. I find to the contrary being able to turn the LCD in sometimes great protection.

I much prefer the info screen control approach to the button little green screen of the D7xxx up. I put up with it on my D800 for its other capabilities.

She showed up today. New condition and only 17 shutter clicks.

I have a D5200, which I bought 4 years ago. I love the articulated screen and used the crap out of it for overhead and down load viewing. It does not have touch but it works great.

I recently got a D7500 and one of the big features in my decision was the touchscreen and the fact the screen can be used for down low and overhead viewing. The D7200 does not have those features.

I love the little screen on the D7500 compared to the D5XXX because it allows me to make adjustments to the camera easily when in MS or A mode without having to go through menus or look through the viewfinder. I can see the setting just by looking at it, just like my SLRs of the 1970s to 2000.

Just as a comment, I never used screen protectors on smartphones or cameras. They reduce the sensitivity of the touch feature. Nowadays, the glass they use is much better than it used to be.

I hated the little green screen on my D7000 because it took reading glasses for me to use it. Plus finding randomy placed buttons in the dark. The problem with the D7xxx is that the info screen isn’t active for what you want to change. It is on the D5xxxs. It is bright and readable in all light.

A lot of people mistakenly think you need to go to menus to adjust D5xxxs. Nope. All you need is there on the active info screen.

Hope they fixed the functionality of the info screen on the touch screen D7500. It is great on the D5600.

Yes, the D5200 did have all the info on the one screen and I'm sure that with the touchscreen it's much easier to access compared to the buttons-only D5200.

Still learning it but so far not seeing a big improvement due to touch screen compared to D5300. Seems to have some clunky aspects.

SnapBridge also seeming clunky as some have reported.

Yeah, SnapBridge is not the greatest piece of software ever invented. Clunky is a good word for it, but it does work after a fashion. I am able to take pictures with my D7500 and watch them go up to my NikonImageSpace account. I can also control the D7500 from my Note8.

Sorry to heard the touchscreen on the D5300 is not up to snuff. Is it not responding properly or is it not implemented properly?

D5600 has the touch screen. D5300 is what I had before. Snapbridge is a major butt pain compared to using the infrared release on the D5300.

The touchscreen is working as designed. I put a glass screen protector on today and it works fine with that. Also they have modified the screen recess so it folds fully with the screen protector on.

The clunkiness I mention is compared to the layout and function on my Lumix GM5. For example, the info screen isn’t fully functional when you open it. You have to touch an icon or button to access the stuff on the lower half of the screen. Although ISO shows on the upper half of the screen you can’t control it there. You need to activate the lower part of the screen and then click on ISO.

Those concerns may go away as I get used to operating with it.

I really like the playback with the touch screen. Finger zoom is cool.

Yeah, I fumbled when typing: I meant the D5600 but typed D5300. I blame age and global warming for my mistake.

So, there seems to be some inconsistency in the design of the software. As you say, maybe after using it for a bit, the reasons for the design decisions may be understandable. I'm still learning my camera and have started playing with live view and touchscreen functions to control it. It is neat.
