So, how much editing do you do?

As much as is required to get the result I want. I tend to photograph with this in mind:
"The concept of the photograph precedes the operation of the camera. The print [image] itself is somewhat of an interpretation, a performance of the photographic idea."— Ansel Adams. I rarely do photographs of people nor do I hire out, so I am free to photograph and process in the way I want.

I did a (free) photo shoot for my Sis-n-law, husband & their dog over the summer in locations they choose around a farm, all outdoors and they turned out good. The couple loved them and had some even done on canvas and used others on Christmas cards this year. My editing consisted of lighting and cropping and very minor touch up on a face pic here and I was done.

A month later the same couple goes with his family to a nice lake and his parents hired a well known lady to do a photo session. The pics were stunning, and not cheap I’m sure but the editing was so much it didn’t even look like the people I know. Skin was perfect in every way. In one pic she even changed the color of everyone’s shirt to the same color. As great as the pics looked it just wasn’t my style even if I was that great on PS.

I follow a Photographer on FB who post some incredible pics and ask once if he would post the original, straight from the camera pic of a certain picture but he wouldn’t for nothing. So what do you guys and gals do to your pics that your doing for others be it free or for money?

Sounds like this photographer was better than you. Happens, I wouldn’t worry about it. On the other hand, they may have not liked your results enough to do future shoots. That should be ok as well. Like captain said, if the couple/parents were happy, that is all that matters.

I personally don’t do a lot of editing...I only use LR, for a quick crop, adjust exposure a little, maybe a small bump in contrast, clarity or dehaze. I don’t judge those who do more editing. In my view, it’s their art and their creativeness coming out. I just choose not to do a lot because my style is more natural unless I am trying to “save” an image that’s too far gone and I have a need to manipulate it further to make it presentable. When it comes to people though, I was taught to make sure you never remove more than you should... because a birthmark or mole would be noticeably absent and it may be something that would insult the person being photographed if it’s removed in post. Just my two cents.

Right! But you can find badly processed “natural looking” results and also tastefully done ones. Same with “heavy processing”. Always depends on the photographer. Doesn’t matter how much processing the photographer is applying, as long as it is done well.

Most images can benefit from some careful dodging and/or burning here and there.

If you shoot RAW (and I do), it has to be processed. In fact, it is the point of shooting RAW.

Raw does not HAVE to be processed, but yes, it usually is. I shoot LOTS of raw that don't need any processing, but they can always be enhanced. So anything that I print or post gets some processing but could be fine without it.

Here are two shots with the SOOC and the finished image.
Like everybody, how much PP depends on how well I took the original shot, mostly proper exposure.
I'll let you be the judge.
My shots are all Lightroom, so there's only so much I can do anyway!!

My experience (after MANY years) is that a bit more attention when taking the picture saves me hours in front of my computer ...
I use Lightroom to make my necessary adjustments, only 1 in about 50 images gets the Photoshop treatment.
This philosophy gives me more time to enjoy life and to take even more pictures.

I go down the right column in LR. Cropping, exposure, contrast, etc. I also check the box to enable camera/lens correction. I shoot NEF (raw), so processing is necessary. It goes pretty fast.

Doesn't money subjugate your desire to "shoot for realism"? If they want your work altered in such a way then the realism is lost.

I adjust as little as needed. When I like it then that is enough.

Totally depends on the shot. Some of my images need next to nothing and look just the way I like, others need some love to get them to that place. In the end, I strive for believable, realistic images that reflect the scene as I experienced it.

I have the same mindset.

Cropping for sure, often adjusting color or contrast. Sometimes eliminating unwanted objects, and for ladies, removing some lines or blemishes. Very seldom, sharpening.
