I am a lurking member, morning coffee and this Forum. Have learned so much, many thanks to you all. Going out west next spring and have been yearning to purchase a wide angled lens. I shoot with a Canon 70D and mostly with a 5dsr. The lens that I use for landscapes is the 100-400 II and love it. But I have been looking at photos using a wide angle lens the , Canon 16 -35mmF4 II and also love the wide angled results but don't know if it is truly worth spending the money. Input please, and thank you in advance for your responses.

I just bought a used Canon 17-40mm. I love it. I use a Canon 70D and 5D Classic. In both cases, the lens is sharp and full of color. I am not sure what your budget is, but the 17-40 f4 is less expensive then 16-35 f4 and it has a longer reach at the long end. Of course if you get the 16-35 f2.8, you will pay around $1300, but it is a n F2.8.

For a crop sensor camera, I would recommend the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 ART.

Sandy.... I recently purchased a used 16-35 F/4 L IS USM ($750.00) which has excellent reviews, but I'm not sure if this is the lens you're talking about. There isn't a "II" model for the 16-35 F/4 L lens but there is a "II" for the F/2.8 model but it (naturally) is more expensive yet it doesn't have IS, plus the latest model is the F/2.8 III.

Hope this hasn't been confusing.

Merry Christmas !!
Don

You might want to rent a lense from the many suggestions. A zoom somewhere in the 11-35 range should give you an idea if you will want one for future endeavors.

I too have both an APS-C and FF body (80D & 5DIV - formerly a 7DII and 6D before swapping) and my wide angle is a 14 mm prime (Samyang - but made for many brand names, mine is marked Bower but the most common is Rokinon) it is an f/2.8 and manual focus. They now have an AF version of this lens which in the Canon EF mount is f/2.4 and less than 800 at B&H right now.
I did have a Tamron 10-24 with is a crop sensor lens but my daughter fell in love with it so I gave it to her.

Thank you all so much for responding. I will definitely look at the other suggestions for different lenses. Renting first is an excellent idea. Also I need to think about my needs and my wants for a little while.
I wish everyone a peaceful and Merry Christmas.

My favorite landscape lens is the Nikon 16-35 mm F4. But, I would not take that lens on vacation because it would require I also take the FF Nikon D810. Too heavy, two limited. On trips and vacations I take my point and shoot Sony HX90V, with a pop up view finder and a Zeiss 24-720 mm lens. I need nothing else on trips and vacations. I have a belt pouch so I am hands free for balance and holding my wife's hand. Merry Christmas.

You got the 10-18 EF-S for the 70D at a reasonable price. Have heard it's L quality. But "One never knows, do one." Fats Waller

I had a 16-35 f/4L and really liked it but in the end it didn’t do much more than my 24-105 f/4L. I felt like I was paying $1000 for 8mm difference. I sold it to help fund my 70-200 f/2.8L is usm ii lens that I absolutely love and it stays on my camera.

Consider the Sigma 10-20 mm. It is fairly inexpensive and good quality. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I shoot Nikon, I can’t address your specific lens question, but I did come across the same issue a couple of years ago when I was in the market for the type of lens you’re looking for. On keh.com I found a very nice 17-35 3.5-4.5 that I use a lot and I’m very happy with. You can save quite a bit with a reliable used item and by forgoing the fixed f-stop zoom and still get excellent image quality. That lens cost me about $350.00

I agree with PaulB. The Sigma 10-20 is an excellent lens for what you will be doing. Last year I took it on a trip to the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon area and it served me well. Most of my shots were taken more on the 10mm end than the 20 mm end. A also had 18-200 and 55-300 lenses in my backpack and used those lenses quite a bit.
