Not my words...
Just found this doing an internet search asking your same question that's all...

This is copied word for word from Nikon in reference to AF-P lenses: "The lens will default to VR on when attached to models released prior to the D3400: D3300, D5500, D5300, D5200, D7200, D7100. These cameras will also require a firmware upgrade to access the menu to turn off the VR." You need to update your firmware to 1.02 at

Despite these words from Nikon the ability to turn off VR with AF-P lenses apparently was not actually implemented in the latest firmware for D7100 or D7200. I use the 70 -300 daily on my D7100, I upgraded to the 1.02 firmware and no where in the menus can I find the promised option. Nor can I find anything online to indicate that this is different for the D7200.

This is the same Nikon that puts a brilliant feature of Auto AF Fine Tune on the D500 and not one word of mention for it in the D500 manual.

That wasn't what I meant, but while waiting I stumbled upon this: AF-P lenses use a Pulse or stepping motor. So it's P for Pulse.

Right. They claim it is faster and more accurate than the AF-S motor.

And probably cheaper.

I was able to upgrade the firmware on my D5300s to incorporate the turn off feature. I bought a grey market 70-300 VR AF-P. It is O.K. Better than the AF-S 55-300. I can’t imagine a reason to turn off VR. You don’t need to on a tripod with the new VR algorithms.
