Lots smaller/lighter ! and the internal zoom is easier/quicker. Works great with 1.4X and tripod collar also.

How much is the 400 ??

I have the 100-400 II and it is incredible across the board. Even have a 1.4 extender when I need the extra reach. I keep wavering about getting the 70-200 for those few times I'm doing indoor action for the newspaper. In that case i would need the F2.8. So to date, I have not needed 70-200 as I can use the other and kick up the ISO.

If you read about the 100-400mm you will see the 70-200mm is redundant and not as good, fast and best of all the 100-400mm focuses much closer and at 400mm is pushing macro magnification. Nothing else comes close.
So if you are after the 100-400mm ditch the 70 -200mm.
I do have the new 100-400mm.
One lens replaces 2 and has the close focus the others are lacking.
Add a 24-105mm and you are all set.

Jimmy .....

This really comes down to what your primary mission will be. If it's outside with good light you want the 100-400

Of your doing events side with shoddy light you want the 70-200 f/2.8.

I have a 70-200 L f/4 IS. Nice lens and inside a church lets say I'm shooting wide open, 200mm, 1/60 - 1/80, ISO - 3200. That extra stop is nice when you need it and remember compared to the 100-400 your talking about 2 stops when comparing to a 70-200 f/2.8

If your doing sports events lets say inside a high school gym your going to want the 70-200 f/2.8. I've been known to pull out my 85mm f/1.8 for sporting inside .... when you need light .... you need light ;)

And what do you think about a 70-200 f/2.8 II. Much faster then the 100-400, add a 2x and you now have 400mm f/5.6. Heavy, yes, but very good optics.

A 70-200 f/4 IS is a perfect lens for rodeo. It is as good at f/4 as the 2.8 is at f/4. Stick a 1.4X on there and you are carrying much less weight. If you don't need the extra stop most pros will tell you to buy the f/4 ;)
