Major dilemma

Having decided to buy one of these cameras, Lumix GX85 and Canon SL2, I have some questions:

1. Does Nikon makes a camera with similar specs and price and which is that so I can add it to the list?
2. Can any of you rate these cameras plus his proposed Nikon? Elaborate as mush as possible. Image quality is the main consideration. On the other hand high price is a deterrent. Compact too. Try to stay under $1000 or even $800 including tax.
3. Do you strongly suggest any other brand, but do not try to prove without reason that what you have is the best. Be objective if you can.

I know these are common questions but when you are stuck you need some good help.

Thank you

This one here has similar specs and has a very good image quality. This is an upgrade from the D3200 which I have and have taken many good pics with. The price is only $396,95 right now with a kit lens. Read the reviews at B&H to see what other people think of it.

here is a good comparison of the Canon vs Nikon D3300. Image quality better on the Nikon, Canon has better features like tilt screen, touch screen.

First, you are correct. These are very general questions. YouTube has quite a few videos on different reviews for cameras. I'd stick with one person if possible to get the best information possible.
Second, picture quality depends more on the lens, than the camera.
Third, check the manufacturer's websites, to get the specs for the particulat camera you're interested in.
I hope that helps.

Is D3400 inferior to D3300? I just wonder not suggesting the newer model?

Other models of the Nikon line within your budget that have the same image quality but different features would be Nikon D3400, D5300, D5500 and D5600. Those are all available at B&H in different packages with or without lenses but within your budget. You kind of have to decide what features you need and pick your camera accordingly.

I Have made my homework. I just want to decide based also on others' opinions because it seems that all have image quality small problems with their kit lens.

Some user claim that the D3300 is in some practical ways a little bit better than the D3400, but it depends on the needs of each user.

Ok, that is good that you have done the homework Yes, the kit lenses are usually the weakest point in those camers. So, if that is your concern now I think that if you could get one of those Nikon cameras with the 18-140 kit lens that would be the best camera plus kit lens package you could get. That lens is by many said to be the best kit lens for those cameras. Then you are in the $950 range for the latest model in D5xxx lineup.

And if you are in this range anyway you might as well get the Nikon D7200. It is generally considered better then the other cameras I have mentioned because it is more rugged, with better focus system and more frames pr. second and so on. This is a camera that is better fit for sports and action and wildlife than the others and is available for a very good price right now. Then you would be buying a camera in a different class then the others. Image quality will be more or less the same but the camera will in most other ways function better for you. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1127272-REG/nikon_1555_d7200_dslr_camera_with.html

I only shoot Nikon, so I can't accurately comment on other brands, but as far as kit lenses are concerned, you can get very good results with the inexpensive lenses manufacturers ship with their cameras. I switched to full frame recently & I'm getting my lenses used from eBay. These lenses are better quality than the "plastic" ones provided with most of the crop sensor bodies. They're much cheaper but a little heavier. It's a trade-off for better glass. Good luck!

Yes, good to see this, it was the low light performance of the D3400 people are mainly complaining about in comparison with the older model. For those shooting a lot in the dark the older model will give a bit better pictures. Otherwise the D3400 is an improvement in most ways.

I do not know where the D7500 stands currently at Consumer reports. But all the high end models, like D500 and D7500, that have been added to the product lineup lately are way more expensive than the budget of the OP so they do not matter in this comparison. I think the best value for money right now is the D7200 with the 18-140 lens.

The D7200 is highly regarded camera by almost all of its users. I do not have one so can not speak from personal experience but know it is by users considered the best Nikon Aps-c camera in many years. The D7500 is a very good camera also, but it has less resolution and that has disappointed many Nikon users. Also it has only one memory card slot and is made more of plastic than metal. Yes, some users do not like plastic vs metel even if it means a lighter camera that is easier to carry. And those plastic materials today are really strong so it does not mean your camera will crack at any moment.

The downside of the D7200 vs the D3300, 3400, 5300, 5500, 5600 is that it is heavier and bulkier and more fit for professional or semi professionl use. The others are more of a beginners cameras. But all those have good image quality in common.
