Need to upgrade my MacBook Pro from Maverick to one of the newer Sierra operating systems.

My current LR5 is not compatible. I don't have the funds to buy LR6 @ $200 and I don't want to subscribe to their perpetual monthly LR.

Recently switched from Photoshop CS5 to Affinity which I like very much, but how do I catalog my photo's now?

Question:

What image management software could I use that is similar to LR to store and manage photo libraries that is not going to cost an arm and a leg? I don't want to start making my own desktop files.

Hmm not sure on the exact limits on lightroom 5 its fine on yosemite. Have you thought about dual booting? I run several versions of osx on one external HDD resides yosemite(work) El Capitan and Sierra or High Sierra. I also run virtual machines internally including windows 10 ubuntu sierra el capitan and snow leopard server. If you are not using bootcamp its fairly straight forward to resize your main partition and then install sierra in the freed space 30-40GB would be fine. If you have an external drive its fairly straightforward to create a bootable partition on that.

E.g use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your internal drive to the external and then upgrade the external from mavericks to Sierra. You might still get to run LR on Sierra, the main issue is the new file system that is used by default by Sierra on a fresh install its case sensitive and it seems adobe were a little sloppy on their file system calls. If it's an upgrade Sierra shouldn't change the existing hfs+ file system and with a bit of luck Lightroom 5 will still work.

Anyway not impossible, the other option might be to get yosemite or el capitan bit of a game getting el capitan now if you haven't had it, you need a mac that doesn't support sierra.

If you have a look , a good look on adobes site for the standalone LR6 you should be able to find the upgrade option its around $72

I have to read this one closely Blackest, you are more experienced with the workings of systems than I. I had already considered working my way up from Yosemite or even using El Capitan, but for some reason Apple makes it very difficult to find the downloads for the straight 10.10 .. The upgrades such as 10.10.1 and higher won't allow me to install without 10.10 for example.

I have no experience with partitioning or messing with the external drive. But I do understand somewhat the instructions given for Carbon Copier... that I might be able to accomplish. I just don't want to mess anything up. Last resort I could get an Apple techie to do it all for me.

There's a lot of bugs with LR5 and sierra such as back up files not going where they should, image quality destruction, and whole modules and sliders disappearing. I don't want to corrupt my library files by taking a chance on a new OS.

I certainly appreciate your taking time to answer so thoroughly! Islander

I'll check for the stand alone upgrade for LR6 ... $72 is ok.

Apple makes life a tad awkward for OS upgrades, if you have had yosemite downloaded on your apple id you can grab it again. i personally got a little bit when they introduced Sierra , I hadn't downloaded El Capitan so it wasn't a straightforward option. I think what I had to do was install Snow leopard i have the DVD on a 2008 macbook pro since its not supported by Sierra then i get the option of downloading El Capitan.

Osx is pretty good about being moved between machines and drives :)

The other alternative is to phone a friend , well see if you know someone who downloaded the osx version you want and then you can get them to download it on their account and then you can install it.

think i'm seeing High Sierra and Yosemite on this Macbook. Not sure if I can access sierra directly

When you upgrade your OS to Sierra or High Sierra you will have Photos for Mac. You can use Affinity as an extension in Photos and use the Photos cataloging system.

Ok, that sounds pretty easy. I'll look into that too. I took iPhoto off my laptop because it opened first instead of LR every time I connected my camera. Thank you Mac.

What makes you think LR5 won't run on the new computer / OS? Do you have the original install file and the final point update to LR5.7? Actually, I think you can download the final update as a single install file directly from Adobe. I'd hold off buying anything new software-wize until you proved / disproved LR5 won't run on the new equipment. It runs 100% fine on Windows 10 and there shouldn't be anything unique about a Mac that makes this software fail to run there ....
