I tried it and the installation failed; and in failing it led to a myriad of problems with W10 after I was able to get rid of the "update." I hope others have had a better experience. Maybe the successful upgraders will pass along some upgrade help to the rest of us.

Meanwhile, my distrust of Microsoft, which began with NX or something like that, years ago; when they shoved that damned registry system down our throats, claiming it is superior to the extremely stable directory-based system which served us so well for so many years; continues to increase as upgrade after upgrade rolls in.

Wishful thinking...Hello Mac, and Goodbye Microsoft. But I am not sure things would be better at Apple. Sorry about the rant. If you've read this far, thanks.

Glad I am not the only one that struggles with Windows. It updated a few days ago and now I cannot access VRBO with Chrome. Finally deleted Chrome and now using FireFox. Then it took me another day to figure out why links in my email would not open
They were all trying to open in Chrome... Geeze.... Apple looks better each day...

What about enabling auto updates in settings (if not already done - it’s the default), and letting the machine update on its own? What message are you seeing that says you need an update, and what error message do you get when it tries?

When I close down my pc it says update.it gives me a choice of update & close or update & restart. When I let it update it took from 8 this morning until 2 this afternoon. There was no screen & the pc looked like it was off.when I shut the pc down & restarted it it says unable to update will restore you to previous windows.this has happened twice to me!

Depending on your internet download speed and the size of the update, it’s certainly possible for it to take that long or longer, and when you interrupt the process (assuming it has failed), then you cause it to fail. Typically Windows (depending on how you have updates configured in settings) will tell you an update is imminent and allow you to pick a time and day for it to take place (I typically pick 11PM). This time, before you give up, why don’t you start the process before you go to bed and see if it’s completed by morning.

My advice: Get a Mac, especially if photography is one of your main interests. A fun story: A computer illiterate, but somewhat arrogant acquaintance of mine was installing Win10 on his girlfriend's computer last year. I asked him if he had saved the previous data and he gave me a huffy look as thou I were being annoying while he was 'busy'. I went on and told him that 10 had had some problems and it was best not to install until the problems were worked out or you really knew what you were doing. That did it....so he retorted "Everybody knows 10 is better than 7 Wilson!!" It did not end well....a lot of data lost and a very pissed off girlfriend.

Your post illustrates the fact the computers are inherently complex machines and unknowledgable operators can take actions that have unpleasant consequences. What it doesn’t demonstrate is the Windows 10 is unstable or that a Mac is a more stable or reliable platform - it isn’t. Both MacOS and Windows (and many Linux distributions) are stable operating systems, that correctly administered, are relatively trouble free. When reading posts such as the OP’s Windows update issue, keep in mind that the vast majority of Win 10 installations are solid and robust, and that most computer professionals consider it to be the best release of Windows yet. When approximately 80% of desktops are running Windows, it’s not surprising that you hear of the occasional issue such as the OP’s or that you hear of more Widows issues than Macs. That doesn’t mean that Macs have less issues, are more stable or robust - there are just less of them. There are bugs (and patches to correct them) in every piece of SW, OSs or aps, but the majority of failures reported in this forum likely have their basis in poor implementation by the owner. Note that I’m making that as a general statement and NOT implying that’s the case with the OP’s issue.

Marilyng, I found that by repeatedly installing the update, (especially the huge 'fall update), it will finally install the needed missing portions that in turn will eventually accept the entire update. Odd that someone had problems after a 'failed attempt' at updating... every 'failed' update on Win 10 I've had failed attempts on, have reported, "Update failed - returned to previous system", and I was none the worse. What usually causes such a lengthy installation, or the need to repeat and repeat, is that many updates were not installed, as they became available, so this 'catching-up' process has to take place. I have all three of my computers updated now, and I find Windows now better than any versions of the past.
